A story carried by Radio Australia on the ban on kava use in Canberra - particularly regarding the Multicultural Festival this weekend has upset the Pacific island community taking part in the event. Australian Capital Territory health authorities say the use of kava without a doctor's prescription is illegal in Australia. ACT police there are warning anyone caught with kava at the multicultural festival which starts tomorrow night could face serious penalties including jail time. Comments on Radio Australia Pacific Facebook page say the ban on kava is racist and ignorant of Pacific island culture. Now there was a meeting held last night to have the kava ban lifted at the festival...and the outcome was still pending.
