Members of the WA Youth Theatre Co are creating a brand new work to show at Yirra Yaakin Theatre, Perth in November / December 2009.

The development of original work is fundamental to a thriving theatre culture. The creation of localised, immediate, relevant contemporary work allows young performers to use their own voices and vision. It empowers them to own their art, and offers a variety of work possibilities in later years.

We will be running writing workshops for "Sweat" on July 6, 7 , 9 and 10 2009 at the King Street Arts Centre.

Let me get this straight - in order merely to audition (with no guarantee of getting in) you must pay a membership fee?
What a scam.

$20 per year membership is a token gesture for a fantastic theatre group.

$20 means that you can audition for all productions for WAYTCo for the year. It also means you find out about other auditions and industry events you might not hear about. I have also been to two plays put on by PTC that were free for WAYTCo members. We have also been able to get cheap tickets for our members to see the current production of Equus. Finally, WAYTCo does run free workshops for its members. I think that's worth twenty bucks!

I think you'll find that

I think you'll find that membership is required for many amateur groups: it's one of the only ways for those groups to pay for things like insurance, venue hire, props, etc etc.

Now if you could convince all governments to fund all companies in perpetuity, then perhaps no one would be asked to pay any kind of membership fees. Until then, get used to it and get over it.
