Dannielle Ashton

Old Mill Theatre Presents

COMPANY

Director: Dannielle Ashton
Musical Director: Matt Austin
Choreographer: Claire Nichols
Stage Manager: Stephen Carr
Audition Date:
Saturday 27th November 2010
Synopsis:

The plot revolves around Bobby, five married couples who are his best friends and his three girlfriends. Bobby is unable to commit to a steady relationship and he is struggling with his identity and sense of belonging.

Unlike most book musicals, which follow a clearly delineated plot, Company is a concept musical composed of short vignettes, presented in no particular chronological order, linked by a celebration for Bobby's 35th birthday. Company was among the first musicals to deal with adult problems through its music.

As Sondheim put it, "Company does deal with upper middle-class people with upper middle-class problems. Broadway theatre has been for many years supported by those people. They really want to escape, and here we're saying we'll bring it right back in their faces ... what they came to a musical to avoid, they suddenly find facing them on the stage."

Characters:
Robert - the central character
Sarah - learning karate and has food issues
Harry - an alcoholic who has control issues
Susan - a gracious Southern belle who suffers from fainting spells
Peter - happier divorced from Susan, he has a secret
Jenny - sweet, but a bit square
David - chic and smokes pot with Robert
Amy - neurotic, gets cold feet on her wedding day
Paul - Amy's fiancé, Jewish
Joanne - acerbic friend of Robert's. Older.
Larry - Joanne's latest husband
April - a naive flight attendant
Marta - hip and loves New York
Kathy - a small town girl, disaffected by New York
