DOUBT (season July 23 - Aug 14)
WHEN: Wednesday, 24 March 2010 - doors open at 7:30pm for a 8:00pm start
SETTING: St Nicholas School, the Bronx New York. 1964.
CAST:
Sister Aloysius Beauvier - in her fifties or sixties, watchful, reserved, unsentimental. She is of the order of the Sisters of Charity and is currently the principal of the primary (elementary) school
Sister James - A young Sister in the same order and teacher at the school. She is in her twenties, reserved also, but with a bit of sunshine in her heart.
Father Flynn - In his late thirties and from a working class background. A priest at St Nicholas - not the senior parish priest. Passionate and committed to his parishioners. Is a counsellor at the school and coaches the boys basketball team.
Mrs Muller - Mother to one of the St Nicholas students - in her thirties, a black woman dressed in her Sunday best - on high alert. (This role is crucial and we won't be faking it, so yes, we must have a black or naturally very dark skinned woman for this role. If you aren't one please don't audition for this role. On the other hand if you know of any black female actresses in the 28 - 45 age range who may be interested please bring them along, or contact me with details so I can contact them - thanks!)
REHEARSAL SCHEDULE:
This is a bit of an unusual one since I'm due to be out of the country on vacation for the whole month of May. This means we'll cast and rehearse for 4 weeks, then there'll be a four week break (in which everyone will learn their lines and blocking), then we'll come back for books down for the rest. This is a magnificent play and an honour to be involved in - a real opportunity for deep, layered and very sensitive performances from all involved. I am very much looking forward to doing some great work with the cast on this one.
Audition will be readings from the script, so while you don't have to prepare a performance piece - please do become familiar with the play script (not just the movie!). While this play is set in the U.S. we will only be using accents if everybody in the cast can carry it off - let's hear your best shot at the audition and I'll decide from there.
