DESTINY
Set in Louisiana this is a witty, light romantic comedy with a hint of 'dem hoodoo mah-jiks eand deasduny' (hoodoo magic and destiny).

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS (in order of appearance)

JULIETTE
Age: 16+
Juliette is the driving force behind the plot. She’s a hoodoo, a spiritual almost magical guardian who has been gifted the task of watching over Ryan and Beth. She is pivotal to the decisions that they make, influencing situations to achieve the right outcome and can often be seen whispering suggestions to the other characters. She speaks with a heavy but understandable accent of either Cajun (lazy French), Haitian (twisted Jamaican) or Creole (a mixture of both with a hint of gangster New Orleansian) origins.

RYAN TANNER
Age: to look 19
Born and raised in Vacherie (Vash-ree), Louisiana, Ryan is the eldest son of the largest producer of cotton in the state. He does not appreciate his privalliged upbringing or his meddlesome mother who insists on planning his entire life for him. Determined not to let her rule and ruin his life, Ryan’s last resort is deception which is unfortunate because he is a terrible liar!

BETH ROARK
Age: to look 19
Born and raised in Gonzales no more than 20 miles from Ryan’s home, Beth is a very intelligent woman from a working class background. Both her parents are deceased and her brother is raising their younger sister while she is away at college. Beth’s life has no structure, she is greatful to her brother for providing her with the opportunity to go to college and make a life for herself but feels guilty that she isn’t in a position to help him out more.

ISOBEL TANNER
Age: to look 40ish
Ryan's mother.
Is your garden variety high societal cow. Her attitude always centers on image and perceptions and of course MONEY! She has her plan and god help anyone who gets in the way of it.

GEORGINA PRICE
Age: to look 19
D.U.M.B! She tries to scheme and fails. She’s a spoilt girl who seems to get more out of life than she deserves because she’s “pretty”. Her personality is very similar to Isobel’s but her intellect falls frightfully short. Very high maintenance, likes shiny things.

JONATHAN TANNER
Age: to look 18-22ish
Ryan's brother. Sly, smarmy and mean. A rich boy with too much time on his hands. His loves are money and women in no particular order and he treats both like they are disposable. Life to him is a game that he is rapidly becoming bored with.

RANDALL TANNER
Age: to look 40-50ish
Oblivious: by choice. He knows what is going on around him but has distanced himself from it all. Is often drawn into conflict only to skirt around it or pander to whoever dominates. He sometimes seems exhausted by the ‘games’ that surround him.

REMI
Age: to compliment Juliette 16+
Remi is a hoodoo. Not as prominent as Juliette he rarely interferes with events but is never the less present, watching, making sure things don’t get too out of hand. He also speaks with a heavy but understandable accent of either Cajun (lazy French), Haitian (twisted Jamaican) or Creole (a mixture of both with a hint of gangster New Orleansian) origins.

DEAN GREGORY
Age: to look 19
Ryan's best friend. Dean is, on the outside, a fun, strong and dependable friend who always seems to be in the right place at the right time. His family history is murky; their money is drying up and he suspects he’s not really his father’s son which makes it difficult for him to form substantial relationships. He has been raised among lies and liars and is trying hard not to be like them.

ANNABELLE LEBEAU (ANNA)
Age: to look 19
Another of Ryan's friends. Anna has all the makings of a spoilt rich girl who gets what she wants but she is SMART. Her experience in societal situations has been extensive and she becomes Beth’s guide on ‘the other side of the river’. Being so intelligent, Anna has a tendancy to hide from her feelings, thinking it better to have the perfect fantasy that the honest reality.

LUKE ROARK
Age: to look 20-30 ish
Beth’s brother. Responsible, protective. He is unaware of what’s unfolding, he just wants a little help to ease the burden of his responsibilities but would never ask for it.
AUNTIE RUTH
Age: to look 40-50
Ryan's Aunt. Plays an important part in Ryan’s life. She was his savior as a boy and is the only one that accepts Beth with open arms. She’s strong and caring. The ‘maternal’ figure.

There are twelve talking roles in all and a couple of lines for the chorus.

Thought you knew Grimm’s fairy tales? Think again.
Once upon a time…
Hidden in the crevices, drawn from the gutters and alleyways of life, comes a startling retelling of classic fairy tales.
This deliciously wicked and dangerously funny one-woman show stars Helpmann Award winning actor and singer Ursula Yovich (Australia, Jindabyne, Waltzing The Wilarra) playing a cast of bit characters from the stories of Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and more.
From one of Australia’s most original contemporary playwrights, Vanessa Bates (Checklist for an Armed Robber), this is a black comedy with songs – a night of stories told by twilight (the original kind) with werewolves and with magic…
