HELP WANTED: Can this singer act..?

Leah | 29/12/2011 - 20:36

Hello Post Readers!

I'm a trained classical singer who has never acted... ever! Not even High School Drama!

I'd love to audition for some community theatre - but I'm lacking confidence!

I'd like to get some stage acting classes to give me a few hints - just the basic stuff.

I've googled and there are a few options in Perth.

I'm wondering what is good... and what is better?

Any recommendations? Suggestions?

Happy New Years everyone Smiling

Cheers
Leah x

I learnt more by taking on small non-speaking/background roles and watching/talking with other actors than any class or training. Even offering to help out backstage doing props or stage-hand duties will give you some exposure.

Alternatively, you could look at the occasional Adult Workshops that some of the Universities do.

Thanks Jeff Smiling

I've done one production in the Chorus - was great fun Laughing out loud

How many shows should I do in the chorus/backstage before having a go at auditioning for a small role do you reckon? Smiling

Until you start thinking, hmm, I'd do it like that personally.

That or take the plunge and start auditioning anyway. Auditioning is possibly the hardest part so if you can get over that before you land a part (as such) you'll be ahead of the game. You could always audition and offer to take on smaller roles and bake-stage. That way you get the Audition Experience while minimising the "risk."

I went for one audition - and had a total ball by the way. Felt like a fun acting workshop Smiling the director was pretty cool.

I'm not shy of the audition process, just scared of not being able to deliver because I don't know enough when it gets to rehearsals etc...

Butttt, I'm reckoning keeping on getting involved and doing chorus stuff and that will be great fun and worth it for the experience.

Thanks for your help Jeff Smiling

Have a great New Years Celebrations!

In these situations, sometimes it is best to leave it in the hands of the director to guide you. You fellow cast members often can help out also.

Leah,
Whether you take classes or not (and they do help), it's always good to audition for the experience and to take roles if they get offered even if they are lesser parts. Along with getting the experience on stage you observe straight acting. This will help build up your acting CV and give a director more confidence in casting you. Perth is small and your reputation for small things like turning up to all rehearsals, taking direction well, versitile as an actor, good projection, etc can easily be checked up upon.

It does take time to climb that ladder though so the sooner you audition the better. It takes time to get into the acting biz.

Best of luck,
B

The musical you commented on asking about rehearsal space would be a perfect start if you get cast! Email me for an audition and we'd love to see you. Its a small cast musical where all characters are main roles and the acting required isn't too hard. The director teaches musical theatre classes so she wouldn't be too worried if you're not sure in the rehearsal process, the cast and her will all be there to give you a step up if you get cast. All you can do is try.

I've been in community theatre for a few years now and I love doing it even if I've never had a main role. When you put your heart and soul into something you definitely see the result no matter how small your part is Sticking out tongue (my first role back in theatre was 10 minutes on stage out of a 2hr play Laughing out loud the most fun was backstage with the other ensemble)

Hope to hear more from you and see you up on stage soon!!
