Outages?

Na | 06/07/2007 - 08:06

Many of you will have noticed a lot of times recently when Theatre Australia has been unavailable. I'd just like to take this opportunity to say two things:

First, I'd like to invite Grant (web admin) to post on this thread and let us know what's been happening behind the scenes. I know he's been working on a special 10-year anniversary present for the site, as well as his general administrative duties, and I'm sure we'd all be comforted by hearing any information about the recent outages.

Secondly, is just a big thanks to Grant for keeping the site going at all! Please, all those regulars and non-regulars, post a message of thanks, because he's the only person who has been working to keep Theatre Aus going for the past 10 years!

Bouquet of flowers for Grant

Your work behind the scenes may go unnoticed, but not forgotten!

Thanks for the support Na.

I can't claim any credit for any improvements in reliability you may notice over the coming days or weeks.

We've had sporadic failures on the database server over the last few weeks. I have access to repair most things, but access to tools for fixing corrupted database files could compromise security for other database users. So every now and then I have to give our generous hosts at Informed Technology a gentle poke if a file has been corrupted just to get things going again. I can't imagine how speedy their paid service is, given that they often respond within minutes to keep this "freebie" running!

Anyway on the 19 June, IT wrote saying they were choosing some new parts to replace some dodgy hardware. Depending on what's required it can take a few weeks for delivery and then some time to plan a seamless installation. I'd expect we'll shortly see improvements in reliability and maybe even some slightly better performance!

Incidentally, I actually wrote saying that I'm _not_ going to be able to do much in time for the tenth birthday celebrations. I've a major web project underway at work - added ten new faces to my team in the last two months! - revamping 500 websites comprising 90,000 pages and retraining 2,000 editors. Just a little busy. And loving every minute of it.

:-)

Regards
Grant

D'oh! I could have sworn you said you were going to do something. Well, maybe we could plan an online party anyway
Cool

Glad to hear you're very busy, and that the hosts are making some improvements... I've just had a 'company' dinner from my employers, with our web design company, so I can understand being completely overwhelmed with major work developments. Ah, beta tests here we come!

(You're welcome by the way!)

Wow - that was the longest I've ever been without Theatre Aus. I think I have withdrawal symptoms... Sticking out tongue

Me too. I've been working long hours and coming home to not being able to relax while catching up. Missed it so much. No blame to you though Grant.

Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.
