Recommended Theatre Design Books (for a lighting designer)

nicola_a | 25/09/2009 - 16:57

Hi everyone,

I am a young lighting designer looking to expand on my "scholary" knowledge. Things like the history of design, learning about different common eras in which theatre might be set, design principles, history of theatre, playwrights, etc.

I know this is very broad but I was wondering if anyone out there had any really top books they could recommend. I'm just trying to get some ideas and get my hands on some books rather than trawling through Google (which is a great resource, but there's a lot out there).

I'm NOT so much interested in "Principles of Lighting Design" books as I have a few of those... I'm more into getting a more well rounded knowledge base.

Thanks in advance,

Nicola

I'm sure others will come along with some suggestions, but in the meantime, check out the FAQ:

There's some good stuff there about lighting, including some book references.

LEGentertainment (Australia) auditions for
By Jeeves!

Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber, and Alan Ayckbourn

Scott-Leonard Landers

By George! By Jove! By Jeeves!

From the classic P.G. Wodehouse stories of the amiably dense Bertie Wooster and his estimable manservant Jeeves,
two of the theater's most celebrated talents have fashioned a jolly chamber
musical chock full of hilarity and invention. Bertie is looking forward to
enlivening a charity benefit at a church hall when his beloved banjo
mysteriously goes missing. Assisted by the unflappable Jeeves, Bertie instead
entertains the audience with an improvised account of how he and two chums -
with, as one song puts it, "a collective I.Q. of around 42" - all got their
names and identities confused in the course of one riotously raucous weekend.
This tale of escalating chaos and labyrinthine high jinx unfolds to the
accompaniment of one of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's most vivacious and sprightly
scores. BY JEEVES cleverly intertwines the twin English passions for amateur
theatrics and bumbling silliness, taking us back to a time when flirty girls
pursued men, not careers, and where good breeding took precedence over
brainpower.
