Having spent seven years doing this for the Association for the Blind of Western Australia, I can tell all who may be interested that it's wonderful experience. How often do you get to play multiple characters in a variety of voices and accents on the stage? With this kind of work you do it all the time! Not only are you adding to your own skills, but you are also providing a much-needed service.

I agree. Donating time and skills to a worthy charity certainly does top up the karma tin and make you a better human being.

It's just unfortunate that, until a year ago, Vision Australia used to pay a modest sum to all of the people who narrated printed texts for the blind. Many smaller time, out of work, older or struggling actors used to make a few dollars each week whilst keeping their skills up, being active and contributing to a worth cause. I know a few of the folk who used to get a gig there.

The above call for talent from VA, unfortunately, confirms my suspicions that these experienced readers have had to move on and seek their daily bread elsewhere and that volunteer readers seem to be a bit thin on the ground at the moment.

Have always dreamt of doing voice over for cartoons. Maybe I can live out this dream whilst helping others instead? Win win I say.
