Want Directing Experience (Courses/Work/Observation)

nkbswe5 | 14/08/2009 - 18:19

Hello theater community!
I'm a 19 year ol' chap who's aspiring to become a director, but I'm having trouble finding courses to gain some skills. I'm currently doing a Live Production, Theater and Events course at Tafe, but that has very little directing parts to it (It's more lighting/sound/stage management).
So basically I'm asking 'What is the best way to gain experience?'. I'm happy if its University/Tafe courses, or if there is somewhere for new playwrights to join new directors and actors who put on small shows. Whatever!

Thanks for any help!
-Matthew

Join your nearest Community Theatres - as many as you can find. Be involved in as many productions as you can, in whatever capacity available. Observe and learn. Then ask if you can have a go at directing. Doing is the best way to learn.

Manly Musical Society (Sydney) presents
Oklahoma!

David Izzard

Oklahoma! is the one of the first of what were called the American ‘book’ musicals where the music and lyrics added to and expanded on the story and as a result includes such classics as “Oh what a beautiful morning”, “Surrey with a fringe on top” and the cheeky “I’m jest a girl who Caint say no”. Manly Musical society in association with Bizzie productions have taken this well-loved musical and breathed new life into it with an amazingly talented young cast. The result is a vibrant and energetic retelling of this much loved piece. Book your tickets today to see the best of Sydney community theatre come together to present one of the most loved musicals of our time.
