I always get a tingle of apprehension when I see a posting like this with scant few details and with no credentials. If anyone has any details about this, would they post them here?

It's almost as bad as someone approaching you in the street and saying "You wanna join my club?"

I am sure that is true, yet you are talking to the person who has a vested interest in whatever the deal is. If their motives are questionable, then how are you to tell? I am not say that this is questionable. What I am saying is getting it from the horses mouth is a biased opinion. Alternative view points and some credentials should really be provided with on offer like this.

Incidentally, in my searching, I did come across Wake Up! WA references which lends a little more credibility to the venture. Still, that does not completely put the project in the clear. Even getting a spot on a fantastic show such as Wake Up! does not clear the chances for getting "ripped off". I still recommend caution.

Incidentally (again), while on the topic of Wake up! WA - They are looking for volunteers! Great TV Experience.

Isn't that the very purpose of a network or forum service? The help advise and support others? Yes, certainly we are all capable of making up our own minds and I (and others on this and similar aites) do not suppose to TELL anyone what they should or should not do. The aim is to provide support and together increase our knowledge of what is happening around the nation. What are good opportunities and what might be best  avoided.

As it happens, I have received information directly from Wake Up! and have been in contact with the organiser of "You Can Act...". While the later is not a part of Wake Up! it is certainly supported by and being promoted through them.

"You Can Act..." is an Access 31 show scheduled for 2008. It aims at increasing TV exposure for writers and performers in WA by providing them opportunities to showcase their talents. I have yet to get further details on the show, but it all sounds good.

In my humble opinion, it does not seem to be dodgy.

You should always exercise caution with ANYTHING you do in the Entertainment Industry but as far as I can tell, it’s not costing the performers any money and can help get them some experience…

That being said, I left a message and have not received any calls regarding more information but this I would assume is more because of the time of year rather then a dodgy company.

As it has been said before, do your homework and investigate it yourself.

Have a merry Christmas everyone and a great 2008 Eye-wink

I agree with both sides of the argument - the reason why I said it seemed sus is that there is so little information, and the only way to gain it is by calling up. If it's such a great opportunity, then you, as the organiser, would do your best to offer as much information about it as possible.

You would additionally include at least some basic details about the people behind it; more than a paragraph. Additionally, if you post it on sites, you would expect more information about how the tapes are judged, who is viewing them, and what the background is of the judges. I would not send any applications without first finding this out. (As others have pointed out, yes, this should be done on each applicant's own efforts anyway. But it is up to the organisers to also be as transparent as possible)

As someone who has spent five years hunting down legit auditions and arts jobs, I have developed a sort of instinctive criteria for what I judge to be job ads that don't sound dodgy. (I am not saying the above is or isn't legit, just that this one didn't pass my personal test)

Frankly, more than anything, it's bad publicity. Any exciting new opportunity for emerging artists would be quickly picked up by local press: but without more details, it's hard to get excited or even interested in the program. It may very well be that they lose marketing opportunities because of the lack of information.

After all, we're already debating the merits/legitimacy of the opportunity.

Manly Musical Society (Sydney) presents
Oklahoma!

David Izzard

Oklahoma! is the one of the first of what were called the American ‘book’ musicals where the music and lyrics added to and expanded on the story and as a result includes such classics as “Oh what a beautiful morning”, “Surrey with a fringe on top” and the cheeky “I’m jest a girl who Caint say no”. Manly Musical society in association with Bizzie productions have taken this well-loved musical and breathed new life into it with an amazingly talented young cast. The result is a vibrant and energetic retelling of this much loved piece. Book your tickets today to see the best of Sydney community theatre come together to present one of the most loved musicals of our time.
