Well here it is another Christmas Eve and I hope everyone out there in theatre world has a great Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year.

I know that probably isn't enough characters so I will just mumble on for a bit.

Lots of Scripts to Give Away

I am moving to a smaller house and need to divest myself of a lot of books.
Among these are over 200 individual and collections of play scripts.

I am happy to give these away if anyone wants them.

If anyone who lives in SA and goes to the theatre reasonably regularly would like to write a review of Spotlight Theatre Companies "Stage Whisper" and post it here on Theatre Australia they should contact me by Private Message and I will arrange a couple of comps. Go on, give it a go.

Not Really about Theatre

Anyone who is interested in civil liberties and the campaign for an Australian Bill of Rights should have a look at www.runforyourrights.netne.net

While the one of the initial moving forces behind this petition has been FREE Australia Party, which has connections with various motorcycle clubs, this is an issue which should attract the support of all Australians.

Fires in WA

I hope that all of our friends in the West are well. I am sure that the thoughts and prayers of all non Western Australia residents go to those who may be affected by the fires. I lived through Ash Wednesday here in South Australia in 1985 so you have my deepest sympathies.

Professional versus amatuer

I wrote the essay below a few weeks ago and it was published in "Apollo's Voice" the newsletter of the SA Writers Theatre.
I have worked over many years in both the amateur and professional worlds and still work in both.

Have you ever wanted to be an Angel?

Have you ever wanted to be an Angel but you just don't have the cash? In this case I'm talking about an Angel who is someone who sponsors, or is a patron of, the Arts. Such people do exist but they are few and far between. A lot of theatre just wouldn't get on if it weren't for sponsors, be they government departments, private companies or wealthy individuals. This isn't charity, well not in any pejorative sense, it's patronage in it's purest form. The Arts has never survived without patronage, otherwise known as philanthropy.

Hey Mister, I wanna get my play published!

I’ve been writing plays since the late 1980’s producing 7 full length works and about 15 – 20 short plays ranging from 10 minutes to 50 minutes in length. Most of these plays have been performed, some of them a number of times, by different groups in several countries.

Paucity of submissions for young playwright competitions and showcases

I don't know if this is true anywhere else but

I am involved in the SA Writers Theatre here in Adelaide. This year we ran a competition for young playwrights focused on year 11 and 12 students and had no entries. That's right none.

Australia Council Forum

I attended a forum yesterday in Adelaide about grants and funding through the Australia Council.
An interesting statistic came up.
Apparently according to a survey they did enough people attended performing arts events in 2008/9 to fill the MCG 45 times.

A Catalogue of plays

I am as many of you know a playwright based in Adelaide and associated with the SA Writers Theatre. I have finally decided to set up my catalogue properly and have placed it on my website at

What are Reviews for? And do we have the right to complain?

The debate that occurs on this site a lot when bad reviews are posted has of course raised its ugly head again. It is interesting because I have just read a complaint about a review in a local community theatre paper published here in Adelaide.

Political Correctness and Casting

Recently I have had a couple of points brought to my attention.
First apparently neither Billy Sing the Anglo-Chinese ANZAC nor his Chinese father are to be played by Asian actors in a film or mini series or something.

Footlights

I have the task of creating footlights for a production of "She Stoops to Conquer". I did this in the UK once and was able to acquire at very reasonable cost vacuum formed plastic sea shell style reflectors to fit onto the battens I built. I have "let my fingers do the walking" in various yellow pages and google searched for what I want and have found them overseas but not in this country.
