So let me get this straight.

It’s all courtesies and thank yous when Gordon the Optom reviews your shows favourably, but on the very rare occasion he doesn’t like something (and let’s be honest, Gordon is quite generous), you start calling him a senile, short-sighted (great pun by the way) old fool.

Tricked you. Now you have to read on as punishment.

If you perform theatre, you should see theatre.

This is not a discussion about the necessity of seeing theatre as an means to develop your artistry; although there is that too. This is about going to see theatre to ensure its survival. Let us disregard the spheres of professional and semi professional theatre/fringe, as they are both, in my opinion, in a stable position. Let us turn our attention, however, to their less fortunate cousin, community theatre.

Theatrical friends and peers,

It has been a while since I blogged on this site and already I can hear the trolls emerging from their dark and sordid caves to begin their hateful rants. The subject on which I would like to discuss today, is myself.

A troll is an internet term for a user who makes anonymous and usually irrelevant, if not malicious comments on forum threads. Little do people know how the term became a regular part of the internet lexicon. A troll in the literal sense is a large and fearsome creature of Norse mythology that lives in underground dwellings, caves or dark, stuffy rooms, smelling of body odour and nightly emissions, with only a singular light from a rectangle fixture to illuminate the room. Originating in mythology, the idea of the troll has developed into a malicious being that can be found in modern fantasy narrative and computer gaming. A troll can also be used to describe a person with malevolent intent, without a sense of humour. But this must not be confused with a jerk, who registers on a forum and proceeds to make obscene and silly comments. A troll does not reveal his or her (but mainly his who is dealing with being flaccid) identity to protect themselves from the harsh mentality of the forum mob, who are rather fond of a good internet lynching.

English and Cultural Studies - UWA (Perth) presents
Women Beware Women

Howard Barker/Thomas Middleton

Steve Chinna

Theatre students in English and Cultural Studies at UWA present contemporary English playwright Howard Barker’s rewriting of Thomas Middleton’s early-1620s Jacobean revenge tragedy Women Beware Women. Middleton’s play was last performed at UWA in the Octagon Theatre in 1982, directed by the then director-in-residence Timothy West with a cast comprising English Department staff and members of the UWA Grads and student theatre communities. This radical reworking utilises most of the first four acts and language of Middleton’s play in its first half, with a second half comprised of Barker’s mixture of vividly poetic and robust vernacular language that takes the trajectories of the protagonists towards a denouement which leaves most of the characters surviving, but which shatters the ducal state of greed, misogyny, and moral corruption – a denouement which Middleton saw fit to end with a conventional revenge tragedy massacre of his troublesome protagonists. Suitable for audiences 15+.
