The Return

jeffhansen | 19/11/2009 - 22:27

I first became aware of The Return, by Reg Cribb, when my brother was involved in a production of it in June of last year. From memory, it was directed by Karen Francis under the banner of Stray Cats Theatre Company. It played in Mandurah (and elsewhere I think), but I never got to see my brother's portrayal of Steve, as the Murdoch season was cancelled due to lack of bookings.

A shortened version of the play, cut to fit into the 45 minute limit of Dramafest, was also produced very shortly after this by KADS, directed by Danni Ashton. It was this abbreviated version that was my first, and only, viewing.
I have since seen the 2006 movie "Last Train To Freo", which was based on the play. When I was considering what to offer to Melville Theatre to direct for 2010, The Return was one of the scripts I checked out from the Alexander Library. I also read Don's Party, an Agatha Christie (didn't get too far into that) and a Pinter - can't recall the title, but it was odd. I submitted Don's Party, and The Return. Our three person play reading committee chose to ask me to direct The Return as the first season for 2010.

I was a bit surprised. I though Don's Party would get the nod. It's safer. Its an election year. The Return is quite short, has no interval, and has a liberal sprinkling of the F word.

So this Saturday is Audition day. I was actually hoping to got to Elmars in the Swan Valley to see Othello, but that will have to wait. Response to the audition notice has been pretty good. A Facebook mailout also got one or two auditionees.

So, I shall go to the theatre on Saturday afternoon, and see what turns up. Some of the names are familiar to me, some are not. Only one I've done a show with previously. Some I've seen on stage.

Last year I directed Doctor in the House, and was lucky?? enough to secure a cast that fitted the characters. If I do this again, maybe I'll stop considering it luck, and start thinking it's good casting on my part. From the couple of shows I've directed, I can see that casting the right person in the first place is the most important decision a director can make. The rest is fiddling around the edges. Some directors have been around long enough, and produced enough great product that actors want to do their shows.

I have a way to go yet. In fact, none of last year's cast are auditioning this year. Sticking out tongue

Auditions are done and dusted. Overall, I was very happy with the talent that turned out. And only one no-show for the afternoon.

I now need to do some hard thinking. It, unfortunately, wasn't as clear cut as I would have hoped, so I have sent the auditionees away while I sort through the combinations.

Hopefully I'll be able to announce a cast within the week.

This is a terrific play and will test you as a director. I hope to make it Melville and join the ride to Freo Smiling

Thanks Murray, and you're right. This is going to definitely test me as director. I was thinking about it the other day, that with only a couple of comedies under my belt, and no serious drama, this will find me out if I can't, in fact, direct.

The cast -

Steve - Adam Shuttleworth
Trev - Jesse Way
Lisa - Annabel Maclean
Maureen - Penny Searle
The Writer - Tom Walding

With less than two weeks to opening night, the cast gave me a performance yesterday that I would have been happy to put in front of an audience. It wasn't perfect, and still has a couple of bugs to iron out, but with almost two weeks to go, we are well positioned. It's gratifying when the cast are off book four weeks out, and can run the play without a prompt two weeks out. It then leaves plenty of time to think about the character without the problem of holding a script, or wondering what comes next.

I've taken a couple of weeks off work to get the set finished, and do any other bits and pieces that need doing.

On Thursday morning, a couple of cast members and myself will be fronting up to Radio Fremantle 107.9FM for Dita Jevons' Arts Collage programme at 9:00am.

After a busy few days with hammer and nail, the set is complete - apart from the bit that Adam is going to do for me.
That leaves the lights to set on Saturday, and then tech rehearsal on Sunday.
Just 3 rehearsals before opening night.

I understand Jeff the utalisiation of a 'nudge vernier' on the set, but why the nails?

Just a turn of phrase Joe.

Just a turn of phrase Joe. It was more Metabo battery drill and screws, gutter bolts and wing nuts.

I thought it was strange you being a techie/sparky.

Nails are one of my pet hates in theatre, there is only one thing that is more dangerious on a set ;-

a luvvie let loose wielding a power tool!

From all accounts it seems you have most certainly nailed production directing aspects!

Toi Toi Chookas to the cast 'n crew Jeff!

All the hard work is behind us. Only one rehearsal left, more to get the tech stuff nailed than anything else. The set is complete, and looking good.
We had our preview night last night in front of an audience of about 15, and it was quite well received.

It's been quite a challenge, for myself and the actors involved. I urge you, dear reader, to come along and see for yourself if our efforts have been worthwhile.

Complaints

Fielded the first complaint today about the content of the show. Despite my best efforts to warn of the language content in the play, people are still offended/disgusted by the language. If one has taken the effort to ring and complain, there must be many more who feel the same but don't make the effort.

So, fair warning. I got to the end of page five, and had counted 8 'F' bombs.

This show is not suitable for children, and will offend some people.

Three shows to go

The Return is showing to smallish, but enthusiastic audiences. (Well, the ones who don't leave fifteen minutes into it.)
I have no idea how ticket sales are going for this weekend, but am hopeful that those who come along will leave feeling their admission fee has been well spent.

The show closes this Saturday night, so if you are thinking of heading down to Melville, this week is your last chance.
