Alliance Welcomes Artstart

ImageThe Alliance has welcomed the recent announcement by the Minister for the Arts Peter Garrett about the creation of the ArtStart program, which will offer one-off grants to help graduates start a business as professional artists. The $9.6m program, to be administered by the Australia Council, is being designed for musicians, visual artists, filmmakers and actors. The first grant round will be advertised in late 2009.

Screen Australia Update

ImageNegotiations continue for a new collective agreement to cover all non-SES staff at Screen Australia. The Alliance met with Screen Australia last week and we will hold a report back meeting for all members on Wednesday May 27, 1pm in the theatrette. ImageEquity met with the federal attorney-general last week to discuss the delay in finalising the negotiation of an international copyright treaty to protect the work of Australian performers. We have called on the Government to introduce legislation if the treaty, which has been in discussion for three years, is not implemented in the near future. Our discussions with the attorney-general continue.

Cuts Continue At News Ltd

My Place

ImageEquity met with the producers of new ABC children’s TV show My Place in Sydney this week to negotiate a draft agreement for the production of online content for the show’s website. This will be in line with other recent webisodes agreements negotiated by Equity.

 
Film/TV Crew Meetings Continue

ImageThe Alliance continues to meet with film and TV crew to hear what improvements they would like made to their work conditions and to discuss the upcoming renegotiation of the film and TV crew contract, the MPPA. Last week the Alliance met with grips and electrics, All Saints crew, SFX crew and hair and make up artists in Sydney. Further meetings are planned around the country. To participate in a meeting in your state call 1300 65 65 12 to be put in contact with your Alliance film and TV crew organiser.

 
Mao Signs Deal

ImageThe producers of feature film Mao’s Last Dancer have finally signed the agreement that outlines performers’ pay and conditions, which was reached more than a year ago. Equity thanks those members who refused to participate in any further work on the film until this matter was resolved.
