Report on Censorship

Labrug | 30/04/2007 - 14:20

The MEAA have released a report on the recent introduction of Sedition, Censorship and other associated laws by the Australian Government. It is an interesting read. While the focus is more to do with Freedom of the Press and Journalism, it's relevance is still pertinant.

There have been numerous attempts to supress the voice of the press, most of which have been thwarted thankfully. It highlights the support that exists for freedom of expression while also explaining the attempts to abuse the rights of those who inform us every day. Some of the policies currently in practise are frightening to say the least;

  • Broader powers of the ASIO and ABCC (Australian Building and Construction Commissioner)
  • The Organisational Restructure of the ABC introducing a higher level of 'Governmetn Control'
  • Over-reactive prosecution attempts of note-able TV personalities
  • And more

For keeping us informed of this new development. Should make for some interesting, if not worrying, reading.

While it does highlight that there has been some progress, it documents rather well the potential abuse that these laws are open to with some rather interesting examples.

Little gee government

Didn't get a chance to read it, but I've emailed the link to myself so I can do so at a later date. Honestly, the whole thing just makes me worried. If the scientists are frightened to do work on what makes terrorists, then there is something really wrong with the way our 'G'overnment thinks and works.

I think this is the year Howard will be kicked out - but I don't think Rudd will really be any different.

Lesser of Two

More likely than Liberal I believe. Free Speech is a very strong Union need and if Labor sticks to its roots, then it should be so for them also.

We can but hope and see. A case of the lesser of two evils?

Labour is more likely to soften this legislation but ... It is far too convenient for any government to have an evil wicked enemy to castigate and I beleive that labour will allow much of this to remain in place.
Howard has used international terrorism as a threat to divert us from local issues such as the IR laws. He also has used it to excuse the Iraq war. Rudd will need his own shibboleth to scare the c**p out of us. At the moment he is using global warming and has hired a man who is one of the worlds most devoted supporters of the global warming industry to write a report for us.
Don't get me wrong I belive that global warming is happening and I belive that it will have dramatic effects on the world I don't necessarily believe that it is going to be as bad as Gore and co say it is and I don't believe we have necesarily caused it and can fix it.
Can I ask; if we are prepared as a world to spend 300 billion dollars a year for the next twenty years on the off chance that we might (stress might) reduce global warming effects by 1 or 2 degrees in the next 100 years why are we not prepared to spend the 200 million dollars over the next five years that would provide clean drinking water to most of Africa. Lets look at cost benefits analysis shall we instead of hysteria.

Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.
