State Awards - Do you have one?

Labrug | 11/12/2009 - 13:58

The WA Community Theatre Group has it's state awards. Every Jan we get together to celebrate our efforts in bringing a little culture to our City. Today I got a Private Message asking me if I knew of any other State Awards Ceremonies like this and to be honest, I am ignorant of such things.

Does anyone know if the other states have a Community Theatre Awards Ceremony like that in WA?

Has the Condas.

A City Award, rather than a State one.

Hey Jeff,

That is the City of Newcastle Drama Awards. They were originally council funded, but the council now only partially contribute. If you want more info re them let me know.

We don't have anything like the Finleys.
We have the Adelaide Theatre Critics Circle awards, which are mostly aimed at Pro shows,
The TASA/Adelaide Theatre Guide has annual awards for professional and community theatre:
Both sets of awards are reliant on the play being actually seen by a critic or reviewer who cares enough to make a case for it.
We used to have something called the Ozcarts, these were also a critics circle kind of deal but they awarded multiple mentions and also awarded Raspberries. I was once honoured by getting an Honourable Mention for one play I directed and the award for "worst play of the year" in the same year. It was for two different plays.

Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.

That is terrible that there are Rasberries for theatre. Awards should be a positive experience.
Victoria have the Lyrebird Awards and the VDL (Vic Drama League) awards. These are highly regarded by even professional actors. The late great Bud Tingwell was a huge fan of the Lyrebirds.
Unfortunately I was disapointed when I moved from Melb to Syd where I am yet to hear of any award ceremonies for Community Theatre. They are a great night and give the theatre community their own Logie night. Great for networking. Being on the Lyrebird committee previously they do take a lot of organising. Judging shows and the night itself.
Would be great to see Sydney get one going.

There's little of the like theatre scene - amdram/ pro/am - in this State compared to Vic and perhaps WA and SA - what would there be in NSW?

Why is that so re Queensland one would ask ask.........??

Just in case it was a serious question, the answer is you were not logged in at the time of the posting... Walter Plinge is the default name for non-logged in guests.

The ACT has the Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) Awards each year. It covers Canberra, Batemans Bay, Bega, Bowral, Cowra, Merimbula, Orange, Parkes, Queanbeyan, Wagga Wagga, Wellington, and Yass. Not only do they judge local theatre productions but also school productions. Here is the link to the web page http://www.catawards.com.au/index.php?option=com_frontpage&Itemid=1 . Fortunately, I have been nominated this year. The ceremony will be in February 2010, a glitzy affair.
