Freedom of the Press and the Sedition laws

Logos | 11/05/2007 - 10:29

Hi there me again.
I am pleased to note that at last the news media hve realised the dangers inherent in the new laws combined with what were already quite restrictive regulations on newspapers. With regard to freedom of the press we are now 35th in the world after such leading lights of individual freedoms as Bosnia.
This comes from a news article I heard on radio last night I am now attempting to track down more details.

If it's on the radio, it must be true.

If you don't like it, use your vote at the next election.

I was going to pick on the whole 'no reference' thing as well, but Logos is usually good at presenting sources and backing up his comments. Let's wait until he does (since he said he was going to find more info).

I do and have used my vote intelligently my whole life. In addition I make a point of following up details of this nature. The article I heard was on ABC radio news and related to a study done by a major international organisation. The details of that organisation are what I missed. This country has always had very restrictive laws governing the freedom of the press, ask a journalist friend about D-notices. In fact the media is restricted from telling that there are things they cannot tell you.
And this is also very important to the theatre industry. A free voice is important to us. You are a playwright, do you want what you say in your plays censored. I don't.
I do intend to vote against John Howards Liberals. They are the most conservative government this country has ever had and in fact are verging on the restrictiveness we used to expect from Communist Russia or Fascist Spain or Germany.

Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.

This is related and the cross media group originally formed was the one quoting this report that placed us 35th in the world. I just can't find the damned thing. If anyone can help please post on this thread.

I didn't try that, stupid of me really. I was beginning to think i'd dreamed it. It explains why the article on MSNnine yesterday has vanished if channel nine haven't signed up.
Reporters without Borders. Cool.
Oh and thankyou for your vote of confidence above as well.

Play on anti-terror and sedition laws
Author: James McDonald
Date: 11/05/2007 - 15:49

If there's anyone out there interested in putting on a play dealing with the personal effects of the anti-sedition and anti-terror laws in Australia. I have written one. The dramaturg wanted some changes and I will accommodate some of his suggestions. But, the draft is available for anyone seriously interested in a heavy political play.

SYNOPSIS: A Doorknock Away

Doorknock... is around 90 minutes long and deals head-to-head with the new anti-terror and sedition laws in Australia.

John Howard has been re-elected! Simon is a successful academic, recently promoted to professor. He teaches Islamic politics at a major university and enjoys a comfortable domestic life with his wife, Helen.

Following the arrest in Pakistan of Abi Al Zabhani , a Pakistani national who studied at the university when Simon was an undergraduate, for planning to bomb the railway system in peak hour, Simon's friend Ali is arrested and interrogated for five days. When released, Ali disappears into the Muslim community after warning Simon that the security agents would likely take Simon in for questioning.

Simon is taken hooded to a secret prison, his apartment searched and his passport, documents and computer seized. He is interrogated for seven days and is deprived of sleep and humiliated, until he provides the interrogators with the information they are after.

Simon loses his job, argues with his wife, and organises a rally against the anti-terror and sedition laws at the university, breaking newly promulgated university regulations as well as the anti-terror laws. Finally, he is arrested for sedition.

Doorknock... deals not only with the authoritarianism of the anti-terror and sedition laws, but with the question of what it is to be Australian. Who you know can impact on the liberty and freedoms Australians take for granted when the government votes itself the powers that turn centuries of legal principle on its head. Authoritarianism is a doorknock away from totalitarianism.

Each aspect from what the law allows the government to do (eg., bring troops into the streets) to interrogation methods to the effects of sleep deprivation have been thoroughly researched in the writing of this play.

It a first full-length play (3rd overall) by someone release from the shackles of working for a living.

You can contact me through this site.

It is presently being read by a metropolitan theatre company.

Different but the same.
Mobile phone coverage will be suppressed during George W Bush's visit to Sydney and random stop and search will be allowed during the period of the conference.
This is an infringement of your right to proceed about your lawful business without let or hindrance. And I am prepared to bet that the majority of people searched will be racially profiled and will be of middle eastern appearance.
Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.
