My Journey to the 2008 Adelaide Festival Fringe

Logos | 11/10/2007 - 09:15

I have decided to do what one or two other people have done before and keep a sort of journal of getting my play on for the 2008 Fringe.
First the play. I thought that I had left the passion of politics behind me but the new anti-sedition and anti-terrorist acts have made me angry. Accordingly I have written a play called Scapegoat. The play (auditions are advertised elsewhere on this site) is about a future in which people can be arrested and held indefinitely without charge. Have we forgotten Dr Haniff yet.
It is my intention to present this play in Adelaide for the Adelaide Festival Fringe. Accordingly I have spent the last week working my way slowly but surely through the on-line registration form. I have until Oct 19th to finalise it. I'm not particularly happy that I have to give all the details of my season this early. We don't open until late February but I can manage I guess. My venue apparently has not yet been approved because the owner has not returned the form he has to fill in but that too is something I am sure we can deal with.
The deposit is paid and the balance is sitting in my bank waiting for the approval of the venue.
The Adelaide Fringe is quite expensive $430.00 to enter this year.
I have decided to be a bit brave. Ticket prices are all one price $15.00 which is about the standard concession price for the Fringe these days and the venue is quite small only seats about 50. I am also offering "Pay What You Can" for students and the unemployed on my two Tuesday night shows. Door tickets only after regulsr bookings are seated.
The poster has been started on it's journey. By know I hope the principal image is on the audition notice.
It is a nervous thing putting one's own play on. And I am the producer as well as everything else. I have no company to fall back on only my friends and colleagues in the business.
All is well so far.
On to the next step, casting.

Best of Luck Tony,

I'll be here reading along on your journey. The play sounds interesting- When did you start writing? Is it something you only started recently, or more around the time of Dr Haniff?

Is the $430 dollar fee charged by the fringe just an entry fee or what else do you get for this payment?

Just some basic questions to get the ball rolling!

Sean
(PS Loving Rick!- Tony will understand what I mean)

All festivals charge a fee

All festivals charge a fee (usually around the $400 mark) for being in the festival. This not only helps cover the costs of the festival, but gives you benefits: being listed in the festival's guide book, being promoted through the festival's mailing list and media releases, and being included on the website.

If you happen to be lucky enough to be invited to use one of the festival run venues (hot competition and not all festival-registered shows get the chance), then you get additional resources, but often have to pay a small venue hire charge.

(Tony, I haven't read your actual post, but am planning on doing so later. Then I may provide a comment actually related to what you wrote)

In return for the $430.00 we get an entry in the Guide, we get assistance with media distribution and we get a page on the Fringe website. There are a number of other small things as well. There is some debate as to the value of the fee.
The play, in it's earlist forms has been around about a year, it began with an article I read about the erosion of freedom of speech. If you have been following some of my more impassioned blogs on this site you will have by now realised I am definitely left wing although not neccesarily a fan of the modern Labour Party. I am a libertarian though and I cannot stand to see those basic freedoms eroded. Dr Hanif's plight helped me through a second draft of the play and led me to my present point.
The play is an interrogation essentially and I am also interested in the psychology of imprisonment and the Stockholm Syndrome and while this particular play is essentially political I already feel that it may be the first part of a group of plays addressing these issues.
My interrogator is female as well and I am interested in playing with accepted models and roles. I hope that seeing a woman as jailor and interrogator/torturer will also perhaps shake up peoples world views.

Sean: I'm glad you are enjoying Rick, I would be interested in a critique of some kind eventually. It is your generation I am keen to reach with my new work we need your passion and interest both in practice and as spectators for the industry to survive.

Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.

Just kind of ducking and

Just kind of ducking and weaving through assment tasks at school at the moment- when I get another chance to just spend some time reading I'll write up a critique for it.

Depending on what I do Saturday or Sunday morning I might be able to take another look again and write a bit up.

I'm glad that I can be of some assistance to you and your play.

I've just recently started a play on similar topics to your Scapegoat play- I think freedom of speech is a pretty hot topic at the moment. It's actually going to be the first full length play I've written since the start of the year, I've only had the time and commitment to write and redraft short plays recently.

Chookas Tony! I know just how you feel, and had to go through the same things earlier this year with City Head. I like your idea of the 'pay what you can' on Tuesdays - the Melb. Comedy Festival has an almost similar thing on Tuesdays (Tight Arse Tues, which means most tickets for festival shows are cheaper).

I like your idea for the script. It sounds like a really fascinating exploration of the anti-terrorist laws.

Yep...Me. I designed RICK and i'm back doing another one of Tony's. I'm not totally sure what me role is going to be but I suspect it's sort of Marketing & Promotions, Design (Graphic & Production) and being a sounding board for Tony to reassure him that he's not going to have palpatations, fits or a mental breakdown as we jump on the horse again...

So if anyone wants/or wants to give info/ideas on my side of things that would be cool. I'll make regular posts here as well, if for nothing else than just to tell you all what a pain in the you know what Tony is being. Eye-wink

I will say at the outset though that I reserve the right to tear all ideas to shreds and villify them Eye-wink Nothing personal - that's just the arts buisness! Then again if an idea or concept you suggest works - you'll get the recognition for it. That's ony fair and ethical.

AHH YA GOTTA LOVE IT! PUT A COMPLETELY NEW WORK, ON A HOT SUBJECT, ON THE TOP FLOOR OF A RESTAURANT WITH BUGGER ALL MONEY AND NEXT TO NO CHANCE OF GETING PAID ANYWHERE NEAR THE DOLLARS YOU USUALLY GET IN PRO GIGS!!!

Just what Fringe Theatre should be. LETS GO!!!!
