A change for 2009

Na | 05/01/2009 - 08:51

Well, after last year's outburst over Walters and Plinges and the general malaise that seems to have taken hold over our little community, I've come to a decision. I've decided to take a more backseat approach to this site.

I'm rather sick and tired of being accused by anonymous people of things, and I'm rather sick of the constant bitchiness... so instead of taking an active role in discussions I am going to allow the conversations to go on uninterrupted - obviously for the most part, since I probably will end up replying to something if it's interesting enough. I will be posting some news occasionally, especially something soon which I've been wanting to do for a while, but other than that, I leave you to yourselves.

Now this doesn't mean I'm disappearing (especially now that I have newfound 'powers'), just that I'm going to be more of a silent partner to this community. I'll be checking in just as regularly, but I'm not going to be actively participating on the same level as before. I'm happy to contribute useful information, such as to the FAQ, but I'm not interested in replying or participating in other threads.

All of you Walter Whiners out there who feel it necessary to call me names, feel free to leave your 'hoorays' below. Sticking out tongue

I am not a fan nor a hater of you Na... I must say though, I will miss the amusement your posts gave me (how upset wanabe "neighbours" stars at the age of 14 would make you would amuse me a lot).
I also must side with you slightly as there have been times you have assisted me with a genuine enquirey and it is slightly sad to see your name leave blogs.
Can't you just post to questions that are worth it and if you feel that you have repeated yourself, DON'T POST.
I don't see why you have to be such a drama queen on the other hand and actually blog that you won't be posting anymore.... Just don't blog.
And why you can't repeat yourself for the newbies BEmuses me...
Give them support sometimes we aren't all as blessed as you and don't have your logic!

"Can't you just post to questions that are worth it and if you feel that you have repeated yourself, DON'T POST."

I think that's kind of what I just said - that I will post if it particularly takes my fancy, but I'm not going to be participating in the same way as before.

I usually don't post if I feel I am repeating myself, except to make a point clearer or to add an additional thought where necessary. (As I'm doing now for instance)

"I don't see why you have to be such a drama queen on the other hand and actually blog that you won't be posting anymore.... Just don't blog."

I felt it necessary to blog about not 'blogging' (by the way, I wasn't referring to the blog, which I will be using later this week, but actually referring to replying to threads. They are different things, as only registered members get blogs. However, I'm not going to be actively using either) because last week Grant gave me additional powers to the backend, and I think it's more appropriate that I become a silent 'lurker' than an active participant and try not to abuse those powers. Furthermore, while you may not particularly care to read my 'blog about not blogging', I think it's fair that I get to state my feelings about the direction this community seems to be going in.

"And why you can't repeat yourself for the newbies BEmuses me..."

I do and get told off for doing it. If anyone cares to pick a name to call me, it is either 'know it all' or 'ignorant'. I can't be both, and frankly I'm tired of both getting told off for trying to help and being told off when I don't.

... As for the drama queen bit, maybe it was instilled in me at school. I had two particularly 'queenish' teachers Sticking out tongue

the reason people call you

the reason people call you names is because when you repeat yourself, you don't just repeat yourself, but you make it a point to let everyone know that YOU are repeating yourself and how much it annoys you... I don't think we care how much it annoys you. When newbies.... obviously haven't heard/read you the first time... they don't need to be told how sick of them you are.... many times you have used many procrastinating names and I could do my research and pull the quotes out of threads if you would like. Those names have made actors that already feel helpless, more helpless. They come here for help not to be told they are like the thousands of others that want to be on "Home and Away". You have made them feel like they know NOTHING with your tone.... so what are they meant to do, appreciate your help or think that you are a w@nker?????

I certainly agree with you about the malaise of the site. The debates used to be much more interesting. Now there are very few real discussions about anything and it's nit just the trolls that have driven those debates away people just don't seem to be interested. It's in the nature of sites like this for their active membership to change as people fade away but in this case many of those people are still here they just don't get into the discussions any more.
I used to respond to the 14 year old half wits myself but frankly the vast majority of them never come back to see if they've had an answer so why bother.
I'm not going to stop commenting or blogging but you probably will have noticed (no doubt to some peoples great joy) that I am getting involved much less often. That ios because the site is getting boring.

Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.

Yes, that's exactly it. Most often than not, people will come, post a wanted ad, then disappear. Maybe they are visiting as 'Walters' and read our replies; but it would be useful if they actually did come back and mention that they'd seen the info. (As mentioned in a blog post I did ages and ages ago about interesting stats) At some point, I figure, the info is here, and if you can't be bothered using it or replying back, then the conversation dies on its own.

"I'm not going to stop commenting or blogging but you probably will have noticed (no doubt to some peoples great joy) that I am getting involved much less often. That ios because the site is getting boring."

I've noticed that a great deal of other regulars are no longer posting on the same level as well. The only conversations that hold any interest for me anymore are those in the tech forum, where there has been a useful exchange of ideas (on a side note, Stephen Dean's - external - blog is incredibly useful and interesting)

I have one more thing to get off my chest later this week, I hope, which will no doubt create some controversy.

(And my, don't we have a lot of Walters turn up today to whinge)

I refer specifically to the great many threads we receive that start : I am 14 years old and a brilliant actor ....
All of these people want us to send them a formula to become famous not to become an actor.
I treat all other threads with the respect they deserve, if I have nothing to say I say nothing if I have something to offer I post a comment

I did not even know you had been moderated as I keep my setting on "All the rubbish" I have attempted to moderate you back up and failed so clearly more than one person did not like your posts. I did not have a problem with them.

Well , it IS the "silly season" after all.

Once upon a time, in the 'tropics' high summer used to be known as suicide season so I suppose it's better that all these Whingers let off steam on this site than blow their ?brains out.

Hi gang.

I have watched with growing disillusionment and despair the Decline and Fall of the Malcolm Empire. It is sad to see this once-noble site degenerate into a blithering chat-room, and for many voices to be either swamped, or for them to bail out altogether.

I now volunteer to join the latter camp. The reasons for this are manifold;

a) Because- there are a plethora of Plingers et al who seem intent on stirring up the same old hornets' nests... and too many gullible old hands who fall for their insidious tricks.

b) Because- there are too many people getting uppity if their perspective is challenged, or even questioned.

c) Because- there is too little relevant information being discussed that makes me interested in pursuing theatre.

d) Because- the same arguments are being bandied about as ten years ago.

e) Because- it is my contention that the "moderation" aspect is a big mistake, and is perpetually being abused.

f) Because- action upon suggestions to make this site "better" has not been forthcoming.

g) Because- and this is the kicker, kids....- this site offers nothing to me now.

There will (possibly) be those of (y)our number that will hold the position of "if you leave us, you can't effect any changes" and/or "your abandonment of this site is treason" etc etc.

The sad truth is that if, and most the time it's a very BIG "if", I need any info on theatre in my "community", there are far more pleasing avenues to finding out what's going on without wading throught the mire of idiotic drivel from troublemakers, or stern lectures from the "residents" of this site telling me to "DFT" or to look up FAQs before asking ANY questions or posting a greeting.

I've taken to TALKING to people on the "Tel-e-phone". Works just as well.

So I leave you with that. If anyone else feels the same way, please feel free to join me in my boycott. The rest of you are welcome to post (or not post) whatever you like in retaliation.

I'll be off fencing.

Goodbye,

Eliot McCann

It used to be fun to try and intelligently debate alternative POVs on theatre matters but the invective that comes back makes it less so - in fact, I think I got sucked into some of that myself last year.
I have tried to just ignore any comments made by unregistered members but they litter the pages too much and now with people such as Devil's Advocate registering, it simply proves Grant's point that forcing people to register won't stop those who are hellbent on causing trouble.
I'll continue to use the site for audition info and if I feel moved will contribute, but I fear the audience here now is not (in the majority) an audience of theatre lovers but a poison pen club.

Let's make our own bloody group! Sure it is the antithesis of Habermas' "Public Sphere", but I don't give a shit anymore. The Plinges carry on like a bunch of brown shirts.

And Devil's Advocate lives in a suburb near Mandurah and is probably the same plingehole who has contributed so many negative comments towards MPAC and Murray Music and Drama Club over the past couple of years.

Daniel, I dont live in Mandurah and quite frankly I don't like your tone. I'm entitled to my opinion in this public forum, in much the same way that you are. If you want to make this personal and a slanging match between the two of us...go for it but dont cry and squeal when it happens. Basically you have just jumped to conclusions that are 100% false...now come and make up some more stuff so I can really get stuck into you. No, I'm joking you are a lovely chap Im sure.

Hey Dev, Just wanted to play a little DA with you.

I note on your profile that you have given a suburb of 6125 which is the region of Serpentine, Mardella and Hopeland. While you goegraphically closer to Rockingham, this region is sort of near Mandurah also. Additionally, Danny boy did not say you were in Mandurah but in a suburb near Mandurah.

As for the rest of Danny's comments, I leave well enough alone because I honestly wouldn't have a clue either way.

Anyhoo, Happy New Year from one DA to another.

Not one to usually involve myself in these sorts of discussions, I was a little stunned by the strong word McCann used, although I can understand.

I have one question: If the prime objective of Trolls and Dissenters is to create disillusionment and emotional turmoil, thereby 'forcing' honest folk and true believers to depart, then are they not winning the sad fight?

I find it sad that people (not just McCann) find that this site offers nothing anymore when I can find regularly little pearls and thought provoking postings.

It has been somewhat quiet recently due to the Christmas Quiet when some unfortunates take out their lack of festive enjoyment through faceless jibes and venting. I personally find I can gloss over these taking in their general intent while acknowledging their lack of contribution.

In the greater scheme, they are fluff, small stuff but they are numerous. It can sometimes seems like finding the proverbial four leaf clover in a field as large as Gingin yet you can develop a pattern of recognition where you quickly note the trash and move on.

In order for this site to not devolve into another victim of trash and yet maintain its current flexabilities requires the dedication and support of loyal and honest people who see and support the good stuff, and ignore or dispose of the nonsense.

I support Na's approach to less involvement in the trash and more constructive appearances. We need more of that.

How does making this website into a mudslinging match (and I'm referring to any Walter or Advocate - or are they one and the same Eye-wink) give off the air that we/you are not a bunch of wankers anyway?

Devil, do us all a favour and contribute something more enlightening than 50 billion angry posts about nothing... now I'm off to ... well sad to say, read some blog posts from another slinging match about religion Sticking out tongue.

Hi Na,

you aren't alone. For the past 4 months or so my contribution to this site has purposely lacked. Not that I haven't been reading or visiting, just not actively participating. Unless I felt an intense desire to do so, if something in particular intereseted me.

I'm hoping 2009 will allow the opportunity to come back and participate more without the threat of irresponsible individual Walters and the like feeding off me.

Here's to hopeful improvement! Cheers

After reading this thread in its entirity I wish to make one clear statement. Please do not judge everyone within the post-code of 6125 as being some of these bottom feeders you find on this website. I for one like the nice quiet country lifestyle of Serpentine and being that I am 30 minutes (roughly) away from Mandurah, Rockingham, Murry, Roleystone and Kwinana......... and therefore have a varied list of productions and places to choose from and yes, I have been involded in various roles (on and off stage) in different productions for ALL of these places. I work in the hustle and bustle of Rockingham and look forward to heading out to my quiet little piece of nature where there isnt much traffic, no streetlights and lots of stars, open space.... To steal a phrase from that brilliant aussie movie "The Castle" ...... HOW'S THE SERENITY......

Thankyou all for letting me voice my opinions.
