The School Holidays Are Once Again Upon Us!

Sean B | 11/01/2008 - 21:33

It seemed like it was about time to post another blog, I haven't done it for awhile.

This year I finished year 12 (hooray!)
After that I kind of worked non-stop to Christmas, had barely any time to see daylight let alone realise- Hey I'm on holidays.

More recently I've had more time off (nobody buys chocolates after Christmas for some reason) and have had time to enjoy the holidays, oh as well as get up to some theatrics- more on that later.

What also alerted me to it being the holidays again is the number of young people posting about auditions again- Na is doing her good old redirection job once again- well done Na for holding up the front. It's nice to see other people doing some searches for people in the local areas to give more information and links to where these young people can turn.

Obviously the kids are looking for something to do in the school holidays, so maybe if anyone knows of any school holiday acting schools or camps or similar get togethers for younger people (I know Frankston Arts Centre offer some) maybe we could compile a little list for people to look at and take part in.

Onto the theatrics. The Lazy Creations Group is now over a year old, and to celebrate we are putting on a private production of a new play of mine 'The Famous Hep-Pae Brothers Circ De Funct'. It's been a very exciting process, it's an outdoor play so it's been lots of fun to rehearse outside and take on that challenge of performing with the elements.

It's a very bright colourful show, about a circus where all the performers have walked out on the two Hep-Pae brothers. It's got a nice sized cast of four (all onstage this time, no film or voice characters like in Boy Banned) and involves circus tricks, sight gags, slapstick comedy and one liners and other jokes.

The rehearsal period has been three weeks (we are about to enter the third this week) and the show premieres on the 19th, so it's all very exciting here as we prepare for the show. I've also been very impressed with the cast so far, we've been working hard, and I think the characters have all really come to life. My brilliant Costume designer (and girlfriend- yes I guess I exploited her talents) has done a wonderful job with costumes and some bits of the set as well, adding nicely to the theming of the show and allowing us to create a stage in the great outdoors.

Apart from theatre I've also been doing some film work on a little sitcom one of my friends has written. We filmed episode five of the season the other day and it looks really good, I'm quite impressed.

So what has everyone else been up to these holidays? Exciting projects? Got anything lined up soon? Seen anything good?

Give me a little postcard post about your holidays so far!

Sean

My holidays have consisted

My holidays have consisted of:

a half-hearted effort to finish making some puppets for a film maker (half-hearted for various issues regarding money/contract)

I'm in the middle of creating an online puppet store. I'm going to sell puppets in a unique way - if I can get the store to work! I'm about one step away from finishing, but am stuck with a particular coding issue which is driving me nuts.

Oh, and a particularly fun holiday thing (technically non-holiday) is an issue of employment for 2008!

...Ah the fun of being an artist!

I hope I can make the 19th, and see what you guys have been up to!

Actually with Tafe starting next year, Employment has also become an interesting point for me too.

Full time TAFE means my shifts are going to be a little screwed around, but hopefully I'll still be able to retain some, because I do need to make money.

But the prospect of doing nothing but theatre full time for two years is very exciting- it could be the first and last time I ever do theatre that much in that time frame! Smiling

We hope you'll be there Na, you're one of our VIP's. We had to cancel the matinee- no one was interested, but the night show is pretty much sold out which is fantastic, especially as it's relatively limited to family, friends and VIP's.

It's good we've had more time to focus on rehearsals too- as venue has been nicely covered for us.

I think you'll find, with Swinburne, it will entail a lot of weekends and evening stuff - so make sure whatever job you have is flexible with hours. A lot of students find doing both full-time uni with productions inclusive, tires them and makes weekend jobs very exhausting.

As for the 19th, sorry to hear you had to cancel the matinee! I'll really try and come to the evening one then.

Watch this space Sean for Chapter 5 of my voyage to the Adelaide Fringe. That's all I've done really other than work and spend ten days in the big red suit being the fat jolly man.

Is that all there is? Well if that's all there is my friend, then let's keep dancing.

Worked on some more set

Worked on some more set tonight for Hep-Pae- well actually more prop related. Everything is looking good on the set/prop/costume side of things, as such I'm really looking forward to tomorrow's rehearsal.

Have to make sure the camera is out taking happy snaps!

Show day is this Saturday so it's all very exciting now...I love being this close to the show. Still there's lots of stuff to do- we need to build a cannon for example. But that 'last minute dash' of getting things ready is quite exciting.

Meanwhile-on the lines of employment and Tafe hours etc (I got my letter today, I am in woot) Na do you think opening an online business would be any good?

I think you should wait

I think you should wait until April, to see. By then you'll have done a few of your more major assignments/smaller productions (the really big shows come at the end of each semester, but April is usually Moomba time), and you'll better know of how well you can handle all the commitments.

Also, by then, I will have hopefully sorted out a few things... like employment!

Philip Barry

Joy Sweeney

After getting a divorce from C.K. Dexter Haven, Tracy Lord prepares to marry again… however, in the days before her wedding, Haven and a reporter, posing as her brother’s friend, show up at her doorstep. From there, Tracy is forced to choose among her past love, her present love and her new love. Amidst the situation comedy, and fast-paced dialogue, Barry explores several contemporary social issues, such as society’s perception of class differences in America and attitudes towards adultery and divorce in the 1930’s.
