Sorry for that, but I just wanted your attention.

For the last 2 years I have been shopping my rock opera “Bad Dream” to various Amateur and Professional production companies and I don’t seem to be getting anywhere, most don’t even reply to their email or mail.

I have had some wonderful support and interesting chats.

A year ago a smooth talking producer (I won’t mention him by name) talked the talk, walked the walk, blew a lot of soothing smoke and then just vanished with out so much as a kiss my theatrical derrière. We were preparing to do a work shop of the project at the time. I think he was abducted by Martians as he has not been able to be contacted since. I hope the Alien probing hasn’t been too rough, but then I hope it hasn’t been too gentle either!

It has been an interesting ride thus far and I am sure the ride will only get more interesting as time goes on; I have always loved roller coasters.

The show itself is a tale of love gone bad, simple and to the point. It is dark and a little manic. It has some wonderful soft musical moments as well as some boisterous rock n roll fun.

It is an original Australian composition (written by me) inspired by the music of one of Australia’s finest rock n roll bands and to which the show is scored.

All the show needs is a producer or production team to take it to the stage, otherwise every thing is negotiable.

Yes, I will admit I am little jaded after the events of Captain Sparkle Pant’s smoke trick last year but this isn’t over by any stretch of the imagination. I am stepping back to work on other projects for a little while.

However I am available to talk about “Bad Dream” to anyone in the biz who is fair dinkum about new Australian musical works; all you have to do is get in touch.

For more information, ask and you shall receive but I do require you to provide me with some information first. All you need to do is tell me who you are and which company you work for or with by providing current contact, website and production information etc.

For more information about me or Bad dream or what ever else I am working on check my website.

Most playwrights starting out, have to do the big and difficult job of producing and directing their own shows. I'm not sure how it works where ever you are in Australia, but here in WA , submitting to community theatre involves more than just sending in a script. You have to actually have or be the director.

Obviously with a musical that includes being the musical director and choreographer too...to be honest, I suggest the best way to create networks and find people interested in helping you put on your show is to become involved in somebody elses production first.

You are a man which means even if you are not experienced you will get parts in community theatre. Otherwise every production needs a stage manager, lighting, sound, all the thankless crew jobs that are hard to fill. Even going to see community theatre can be a good way to meet people who will be willing to throw their heart and souls and spare time into helping you get your show up and running.

Emailing is not going to get you anywhere, when the person receiving the email is probably just a retiree volunteering four hours a week of their time to do the book keeping, and check the answering machine for bookings. You need to actually have a relationship with the people involved in that theatre group.

And as far as I can see it works pretty much the same way with professional and fringe/independent theatre. Unlike in the film industry most directors/producers/writers start off on the other side of the stage, or as crew.

I know in Perth people often complain that there are not a lot of opportunities, and the same people seem to get what few breaks there are over and over again. But I find that at least over here there is endless potential to create your own work if you are willing to be the driving force behind it.

Obviously I don't know what limitations you are working with in your current setting, but I do know that just like with everything else, in theatre, it's not who you are but who you are friends with.

Good luck (or should I say break a leg?)
