High Drama from High Street to the High Seas - the Catalpa Story

stinger | 28/10/2008 - 22:10

"Voices From The Tomb" is a radio drama written by WA historian George Russo. It tells the story of the escape of 6 Irish political prisoners from Fremantle Gaol in 1876 and their rescue from certain death off Rockingham beach by a rowboat from the American whaler 'Catalpa' anchored off Garden Island. The narrative graphically illustrates the high degree of planning, intrigue and tension involved in the escapade.

The play will be performed and recorded before a live audience at Princess May Theatre, Fremantle on Wednesday night 12 November 2008 as part of the Fremantle Fringe Festival. Featuring actors from Harbour Theatre, music by members of bush band 'Loaded Dog' and technicians from Fremantle Community Radio, this is a chance to be a part of local history. Admission is free!

'Voices' Goes To Fairbridge

It's not often that a radio play is performed publically more than once. After all, the idea is that it is a unique event, immortalised in audio form only.

Nevertheless, the performance we did at Harbour Theatre as part of the Fremantle Festival Fringe back in November is now due to be repeated, probably more than once, at Fairbridge Festival, Pinjarra, between 17 and 19 April 2009, hopefully with the same cast, crew and orchestra.

While Fairbridge is primarily a music festival, it has been including theatrical pieces by way of diversity (or novelty) over recent years. It's always great fun anyway!

Well gee Peter, I don't

Well gee Peter, I don't know about that. I suppose we'd have to stay down there for the weekend . . . listen to some live music, laze about in beer gardens, check out the town's restaurants, that sort of thing . . . ?

No, sounds unbearable!

Besides, I do so enjoy getting up early on Sunday mornings to read quality news reporting to those who can be bothered to tune in while they eat their weeties. Hey, SOMEBODY might actually be listening and I wouldn't want to disappoint by my absence.

But, oh what the heck . . . there's nothing like having a LIVE audience is there? Not that I think my radio audience (numbering something like, ooh . . . anything up to a dozen or so) are not alive (how would they have switched the radio on?), but you know what I mean. I suppose someone else can read the 'Slimes for a change. Hell, they could play a recording of the previous week and nobody would tell the difference!

So . . . yes alright, count me in. Just as well I've kept the script, eh? Finding where I put it, now that's another matter . . . but April's three months away. She'll be right on the night.

Any clues about when the recording we made at Harbour might be going to air?

Hey, you're looking well in the latest photo . . . dyeing your beard and hair makes you look years younger!

Happy New Year mate . . . and the same to all who browse here.

Tim.

Same to you, Tim lad, and to all.

By the way, the FF is held at Fairbridge Farm, about 6 km out of Pinjarra. Camping facilities are available. The idea is to stay put for the whole weekend and drink in the entertainment - although there are food stalls and bars as well!

Cheers,

Firstly . . . . . Happy new year!

Tim that sounded like a painful decision to make, sweety.

Drinks, entertainment and caravan parks. I'm there. lol.

I'd love to do the techie stuffs again. And it's brilliant timing. That's the week I finish exams and have my week off before Prac. Was planning on taking a drive for a few days. So count me in. The only issue I may possibly have is the 17th - It will depend if I (unfortunately) have an exam on that Friday. That will determine what time I can leave.

And bonus, I know where my script is. lol.
Sorry I'm in a babbling mood today.
