Personal Message gremlins

Tim Prosser | 12/05/2009 - 16:29

For the past month and a half or so I've been receiving anything up to five personal message notifications per day while, in fact, there are no messages there at all. I've twice attempted to report this problem via 'Feedback', but have received no response and can only assume that my reports are not getting through. I suspect also that my replies to genuine personal messages are similarly vanishing into electronic limbo.

Anyone else having similar problems?

Tim, I have the opposite problem. I almost never receive notifications for PMs. However, half of the problem may be that the PMs are actually spam, and deleted by Grant before you have the chance to login and check. I know this - the notifications - have been somewhat out of whack since the last upgrade to the site software and that Grant has been aware of it for some time. If you can't get him via the feedback form, do try his personal email address. He generally responds to that quickly.

I get the same thing as Tim and have likewise tried to stop the Gremlins! Mine seem to be increasing?

You should only receive one

You should only receive one email a day for unread PM's Tim. Even this can be disabled in the user control panel page thingy (to use the technical description).

Thanks Na and Jeff. I must admit that I don't know Grant's E-mail address, but no doubt he'll see this post anyway, if he hasn't already. At least knowing that others have experienced similar 'quirks' has allayed my fears of something being wrong with my computer.

Jeff, what do you mean that I should only receive one E-mail per day? Prior to this current influx of bogus notifications, I only ever received them when there was actually a message there to be viewed. I'd rather like it to go back to that!

In the account settings, you can select whether or not you receive a notification email. It states there that you would receive only one email in a day, regardless of how many unread PM's you have. No PM's - no email.

Well, these bogus notifications are still coming in every day, sometimes four or five of the blasted things in a row. I've reported it through 'feedback' yet again (three times now), but don't hold out much hope of it being fixed because I've had no replies to the previous two reports. I really would like it to stop!

The site's latest trick is to refuse to let me change my signature picture. It WILL allow me to delete the current picture, but when I select another one it takes a month of sundays to come up with 'the changes have been saved' and then it just goes straight back to the picture I've just deleted!

Bl**dy computers! I don't understand them and I certainly don't trust the damned things!

Tim, I will PM you with Grant's personal email. He replies to those much faster than the feedback form.

The picture problem is likewise solvable by contacting Grant. I had the same issue; sometimes the program software this site uses doesn't delete the cached image and refuses to use the new one.

You're welcome - and no, I leave in early July. You may not have seen it, but just today I added a blog post here about my trip; letting everyone know they can keep up-to-date with my experiences via my site/RSS feed. (See my blog post for more info)

I've meant to say it for awhile now, but I think that Na is another great example of the many helpful & proactive people on this site.

I appreciate the fact that people are so willing to share (rather than guard) their creative ideas – it’s a good antidote for a lot of what we get out in the “real world”.

Thanks, all!

Thank you Lisa; likewise,

Thank you Lisa; likewise, it's great to have people who respond with openness and warmth, instead of receiving the usual troll attacks.
