Finding Plays

If you are searching for plays your local library is not generally a good place to start. Even tertiary institute libraries tend to have older works on their shelves. Searching the web is good but for specific searches you can try:

http://www.doollee.com/

They are attempting to amass a complete listing of every playwright and play, published or unpublished, in English since 1956. If you are a playwright (even unpublished) they would like to hear from you as well.

The Victorian Drama League has a large catalogue of playscripts conveniently searchable by type, length and the number of male and female roles:

Anyone hear of the Gutenberg Project? An attempt to convert literature of all beasts into electronic, downloadable files. I grabbed a copy of some J M Barrie Scripts from here recently. Well worth as look. Not just scripts either. Fancy a little Jane Austin anyone?

Oz Scripts Online

The Australian Script Centre in Hobart has a collection of over 1000 scripts by Australian playwrights. You can order scripts online. You can search by playwright or title and there are also groupings suggested by theatre type (schools, amateur, pro etc).

If you join the Script Centre as a member, you can also borrow scripts for a much reduced fee.

They also produce an annual CD collection of new works.

In 2009 they embarked on a project in collaboration with PlayWriting Australia, Currency Press and Playlab Press, to digitise all of their script holdings. Many scripts now have an extract available online so you can read before you buy.

See http://www.ozscript.org for the Scipt Centre and
http://australianplays.org for the online extracts.

finding performace rights

Do not forget about dramatic agents who own the copyright, because you need to apply for the performance rights anyway.
For example
www.hlamgt.com.au
www.cameronsmanagement.com.au
www.stephenbriggs.com
www.austlitagentsassoc.com.au
www.geocities.com/playintheroad/index.html
and the big greedy one - dominoe or something?
actually I wish there were a list because the can be hard to find.
