Experience Augusto Boal's world-famous approach to theatrical community-building.

DATES: 26-29 September (Monday-Thursday) 8:30-11.30am

LOCATION: Held in the Geoffrey Rush Drama Studio on the Uni of Queensland campus in St Lucia.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: QSE is in need of 'spectactors' to assist with facilitator training for the 2011 Prison Project. Theatre of the Oppressed was established in the early 1970s by director/political activist Augusto Boal, for people engaged in the struggle for liberation - both against external/societal oppressors and inside their own minds. It seeks to be a "rehearsal for the revolution" for people who want to effect change in their own lives and communities.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU: Satisfy your curiosity about Boal's powerful methodology, or gain further experience. Sessions will be led by 4th-time Lead Facilitator Rob Pensalfini, and other QSE artist-facilitators.

WHAT'S INCLUDED: Forms may include Forum Theatre, Rainbow or Desire, Image Theatre and other Games for Actors and Non-actors.

WHAT'S REQUIRED: No acting, TO or Shakespeare experience is necessary. There is no other charge for participation besides QSE membership, and you are welcome to invite your friends to register.

Volunteer participants will need to:

  • book online (TO BOOK, CLICK HERE)
  • be 18 years of age or older
  • be or become a 2011 QSE member (annual $15 fee)
  • commit to attending at least 2 of the 4 training days

THE PRISON PROJECT will be held in a maximum-security facility from September-December, fusing TO games with Shakespeare rehearsal and performance (please note volunteers will not participate in prison sessions). The project is led by Artistic Director of The Queensland Shakespeare Ensemble Rob Pensalfini, who - in collaboration with noted TO practitioner Brent Blair - pioneered the first prison project to combine TO and Shakespeare, in 2006. Rob is a Senior Lecturer in Linguistics and Drama at the University of Queensland, a Designated Linklater voice teacher, and an experienced director and actor of Shakespeare. The Prison Project was successfully repeated in 2009 and 2010 with assistance from Arts Queensland, and is supported this year in 2011 by Queensland Corrective Services, SERCO Borallon Correctional Centre and the University of Queensland.
