Climbing Vine is offering young Perth actors the opportunity to learn
practical theatre performance in a hands-on, production based
environment!

The Barn is a period piece, set during wartime. The latest drama from award-winning playwright Emma Humphreys, it focuses on how – and if – we can preserve our humanity and dignity in the face of fear, persecution and violence.

In a remote barn somewhere in the world, survivors of a paramilitary sweep that decimated their entire village hide and hope against hope to survive the night. But they are not the only ones who seek refuge in the barn – three soldiers from the “other side”, the liberating army come to save them from their persecutors, are also needing a place to rest safely. With an injured man, very little food and no contact with their unit, the soldiers are on-edge and uncertain of their surroundings. A situation made even worse, when unknown locals arrive, armed and apparently on the run from some unknown threat. As the night goes on, tensions rise and divisions become apparent, as a storm sets in, trapping everyone together. With suspicion, fear and hatred polluting the air and damaging any attempt at unity, will they all make it to the dawn?

The production will debut at City Farm in November 2011. Workshops and rehearsals take place at Belmont City College, Belmont.

Young actors will take part in a course of weekly workshops as part of our Foundation Program, to develop the performance. The course equips young performers with a sound foundation of performance skill and a hands-on experience of an industry standard production. This is then followed by a two week intensive rehearsal period before the show goes to the stage.

The program begins in June of 2011 and is open to young actors aged 13 to 25.
