And Then There Were None

What: Ten people find themselves stranded on isolated Soldier Island. Instead of a relaxing weekend escape, they are now desperate to escape with their lives. Tension mounts as, one by one, they begin to die.....horribly.

This is more than just another Agatha Christie whodunnit. The characters are complex and come to the audience with a multitude of emotional undercurrents. I will be treating the play as a thriller in the style of a 1940’s black and white movie. The acting will need to reflect this approach without appearing artificial.

Who: Rogers 40-50 The houseman/butler. Rogers is quick, deft, specious and shifty. He dominates his wife.
Accent: Alternates between Received Pronunciation (RP) and lower class
Narracot 40-70 A weathered boatman who only appears in the first 2 pages.
Must be willing to help backstage.
Accent: West Country
Mrs Rogers 40-50 The cook and Rogers’ wife. Ghostlike, worried and frightened.
Accent: Lower class
Vera Claythorne 25-30 Secretary and ex-governess. Attractive, intelligent and capable but has an underlying emotional instability.
Accent: RP
Cptn Philip Lombard 30-35 A soldier of fortune, an adventurer. “A good man in a tight spot”. Bold, brave and charismatic.
Accent: RP
Anthony Marston 20-30 A rich, athletic, handsome youth. No conscience.
Accent: Terribly, terribly RP
William Blore 40-50 Ex-policeman turned private investigator. Foolhardy and jumps to conclusions.
Accent: Starts out RP then reverts to common
Gnrl John Mackenzie 55-65 Retired WW1 hero. Upright, weary, absent minded.
Accent: RP
Emily Brent 40-60 A spinster. Very religious, sharp, suspicious, unfriendly.
Accent: RP
Sir Lawrence Wargrave 50-65 Retired judge, known for liberally handing out the death penalty. Ugly, intelligent, cold and commanding. Takes charge of proceedings on the Island.
Accent: RP (can also be Irish)
Dr Edward Armstrong 40-50 Harley Street surgeon specialising in “nervous conditions”. Closet drinker, gullible, timid, fussy with a weak personality.
Accent: RP
