Company information

The Acting Factory is an alliance of professional theatre practitioners who have trained or reside in the Western Sydney region.

Its goals are to:

  • Enhance the local arts landscape and lift appreciation of theatre in the West.
  • Establish a focal point for actors, writers, directors and other theatre and film practitioners from the Greater West and Blue Mountains.
  • Be an integral part of the community out of which it has grown.
  • Offer vital, affordable theatre to the broad community.

In 1998 a group of graduates from the Q Theatre and Three Stage School of Acting started an ongoing workshop programme to study the plays of William Shakespeare. The outcome, in February 2000, was an ambitious, finely-tuned production entitled Shakespeare, No Holds Bard. To publicise the performances the group needed a name, and, since Three Stage was housed in a factory unit in South Penrith, the name The Acting Factory was coined.

Now fully incorporated and with all legal prerequisites in place, the Acting Factory is looking to become Penrith’s truly resident acting company and a focus for the many professional actors, writers and directors and other theatre and film practitioners in the region. Its first production as an official entity was Gordon Graham’s The Boys in April/May 2002 – a resounding critical success. The Popular Mechanicals followed in December of that year, at the Q Theatre, Penrith and also received outstanding audience feedback.
