Company information
KUCOM THEATRE INC
The original Mackay Community Theatre was formed in July 1947. In those pre-TV days the Mackay Community Theatre produced four plays a year at the Olympic theatre which, with a seating capacity in excess of a thousand, was always well packed. After the Olympic was demolished, the group moved to the Theatre Royal.
In the '70s a group of members broke away to form Kudos Theatre, kicking off with a successful season of the Feydeau farce 'Hotel Paradise'. It functioned well for a couple of years, then an approach was made to the Mackay Community Theatre for a merger (legend has it that Kudos had all the talent and the MCT had all the money!). The merger ensued, thus the Ku from Kudos and the Com from Community formed Kucom Theatre Inc.
With a small but loyal membership, Kucom Theatre Inc until August 2010 owned an old Queenslander (serendipitously located in Shakespeare Street), gutted to form a theatre with a flat acting area, a racked seating capacity of 65, and a small licensed bar providing refreshment for patrons on performance nights. In this unique and intimate setting, three to four high-quality productions have been presented each year. The dress rehearsal night of each production (Tuesday in production week) became the Media Preview night, the following night being offered to local community groups such as the Soroptimists, Friends of the Library, Royal Flying Doctor Service and Mackay Genealogical Society, who would take this opportunity for fund-raising and a social get-together.
In past years Kucom Theatre has been competitive in Drama Festivals, travelling to compete, very successfully, to Yeppoon, Capella, and for a number of years at the North Queensland Festival of One-Act Plays in Townsville. Awards have been won most years including Best Production, Best Male Actor, Best Director and numerous 'Special Mentions'.
Sadly, we are about to bid farewell to the old Kucom playhouse, as the property has been purchased by an expanding local car dealership who have kindly allowed us to continue using the premises until the end of 2011. After that - who knows?

In Purgatory a trial begins. A catatonic Judas Iscariot stands accused. Witnesses take the stand and lawyers argue. Still there is no sign of Jesus. Will he come to the rescue? Only heaven knows!
