Company information

MATES is a community theatre group that is known as the Musical And Theatrical Entertainment Society of the Redlands Inc., and has been a part of the cultural landscape of the Redland Shire since 1990.

MATES is a non-profit group which means that all members are volunteers, and no one derives any financial benefit from the group’s productions.

MATES is an incorporated body which means we must report to the government each year.

As an incorporated body we are run by a management committee that consists of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer and usually a general committee of four members.

MATES perform three shows a year. The first two productions being either comedy or drama scripts and, where possible, the end of year production has been a musical.

The home of MATES is the Birkdale School of Arts Hall, and it is here where the group rehearses two nights a week, and performs their shows in a theatre-restaurant format.

Rather than traditional theatre seating MATES audiences are seated at tables. Audiences are served a complementary supper at interval, and a licensed bar operates at each performance.

MATES commonly attract an aggregate audience of between 460 to 480 patrons over a performance season which runs for four weeks.

The relaxed, informal nature of MATES has been popular with patrons since the group’s inception, and it is a privilege to have regular attendances from several local social clubs.

A great atmosphere and high quality performances make an evening with MATES the perfect way to spend an evening with mates.

If you share a passion for live theatre, are looking to fill in a few spare evenings, would like to meet some new people and have lots of fun at the same time then MATES would love to hear from you.

Hello Hayley

Apologises for the delay in replying to you, I notice you contacted us back in December last year.

Thank you for your interest in future auditions with our theatre society.  I noticed that you indicate you are looking for professional work.  Let me take this moment to tell you that MATES is a community theatre group.  All members, in essence are voluteers so no one is actually paid to perform.  For the most part our members are involved in live theatre "for the love of the game".

Having said this, please do not feel discouraged as we are always very keen to welcome new people, all of whom arrive at the group with varying levels of theatre experience.  Some haven't had the opportunity to be on stage before, others are returning to stage and for others they are continuing a life-long passion.

Please check out the page for the Musical And Theatrical Entertainment Society of the Redlands again, I have updated it with the audition details for our next production - a comedy/musical titled "Mystery on the Orient Express".  The format of this show is audience participation, and there will be some very good opportunities for; actors to develop strong characters, and strong vocalists and supporting chorus-line singers.

The production is due to open on October 18, and continue October 24, 25, 31 and November 1 and 8.

Once again, Hayley, I apologise for being tardy in replying to your corrospondence.  Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

Kindest regards

Greg Pope, MATES Theatre Society
