NIDA is the Australian national theatre school, a centre of excellence in training for theatre, film and television. Its full-time courses provide professional training at a tertiary level for young people wishing to work in theatre, film or television as actors, stage managers, designers, scenery, costume or properties makers, directors, voice and movement teachers.
Entry to the courses is by audition or interview, conducted in every capital city throughout the country in November each year. Details of venues and dates are supplied on receipt of an application form.
NIDA full-time courses are accredited for the award of degrees, graduate diplomas and diplomas in seven specialised areas: Acting, Design, Technical Production, Production Crafts, Directing, Movement Studies and Voice Studies.
NIDA courses are professionally effective and graduates enjoy a high rate of employment in the expanding Australian and international arts entertainment industry.
NIDAs graduates have received Australian honours; have been awarded more than 200 fellowships, scholarships and grants; and have won well over 600 international and national awards, including OSCARS, BAFTAS, EMMYs and film festival awards. The roll of graduates reads like a whos who of the entertainment arts, and includes Mel Gibson, Judy Davis, Cate Blanchett and Baz Luhrmann.
NIDA also has a state-of-the-art performance and training facility in Kensington, Sydney, which includes:
- A Contemporary Theatre designed to stage plays and musicals, seating a commercially viable audience of 750, including professional sound, light and scenery technology.
- A Studio Sound Stage with post-production facilities and associated design and rehearsal space for teaching acting for the camera, basic film technology and special effects imaging.
- A Multi-Media Performance Library to provide new information technology, facilities for print, video, film, CD storage and other digital media, as well as accessible archive storage. The NIDA Library is now the only performing arts library in NSW and this new facility is intended to be the most comprehensive in Australia, available to all members of the industry.
