Company information
Based in Brisbane, QSE exists to create evocative, engaging theatre that awakes the senses and enriches the lives of both its member artists and its audiences. QSE's core belief is that theatre is most potent when embodied by artists who train together; exchanging skills, experience and a sense of community with each other, and most importantly, sharing stories with a live audience. Through the incisive works of William Shakespeare QSE explores the human condition in its many and varied forms.

QSE performances range from full productions and smaller workshop productions to staged readings and specialised Shakespeare's Shorts performances for libraries, schools, festivals and other community and corporate events.

QSE is a training-based ensemble. The training program focuses on the actor's personal connection to Shakespeare's words, and is strongly based in the Linklater voice/actor training system. Most training programs are open to the public and cater to all skill levels, from professional actors through to high school students and teachers.

QSE first appeared in public in two staged readings: KING JOHN in September 2001 and AS YOU LIKE IT in November 2001. AS YOU LIKE IT was then presented as QSE's first full production in June 2003. An experimental, workshop production of PERICLES was presented in 2002, and CORIOLANUS in November 2003. A workshop production entitled THE MADNESS OF KING LEAR - which used text from KING LEAR to focus on the spiral of madness and despair was presented early in 2005. In October/November 2005 THE COMEDY OF ERRORS played at !Metro Arts Theatre Space in Brisbane CBD to critical acclaim, and earned a Matilda Award for the 2006 production of Ovid's METAMORPHOSES. Since 2007, QSE has performed comedies in the Roma Street Parkland, including MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, TWELFTH NIGHT and AS YOU LIKE IT. QSE is currently working on several 30-minute versions of Shakespeare's plays - the SHAKESPEARE'S SHORTS series.

Currently the ensemble receives some administration support from the University of Queensland and some in kind support from the Queensland University of Technology.

Following the closure of the Avalon Theatre at St Lucia in 2005, QSE seeks a permanent home.
