This play could easily be called "Woman in and out of Mind", dealing as it does with main character Susan's vaccilating journey between reality and unreality to its almost inevitable conclusion. In the modern vernacular, I suppose you could describe this as a 'psycho chick play'.
I am not generally a big fan of Alan Ayckbourn's style of writing, however in this instance Lindsay Sedgwick and his cast carry it off charmingly. They manage to tug on just about every emotional heartstring - maybe even one or two that AA himself hadn't even envisaged.
One of the things I love about community theatre is the way one always makes do as best one can with what one has, whether it be people or property. This production is typical of that. There is a blend of experience and youthful exuberance onstage which is very engaging. And while the set, sound and lighting are hardly 'high-tec', they all seem quite appropriate to this particular narrative.
I sincerely recommend this play to all, perhaps especially drama students and AA fans. There are only two nights left and seats may be difficult to get at this stage. Also, do stay behind for an after-show drink and chat with the cast and crew.
