Media Coverage - The Sum of Us

Garry D | 13/01/2009 - 14:37

I have seen a lot of media coverage in local newspapers and the internet this week about the Finley nominations received for The Sum of Us, which was staged at Old Mill Theatre last February. The articles appear as though they might have been derived from press releases made (or at least sanctioned) by Old Mill - this is certainly not the case. Rather, I understand that they are a result of the efforts of someone that was involved in the production itself.

Personally, I'm more a little embarrassed by this media coverage.

Our theatre is justifiably proud of the nominations it has received, which we think is a fair reflection of a very good year for us. We're obviously hoping for the best on awards night, just as all the other nominated theatres will be.

The Sum of Us has received four nominations, which puts it on a par with at least five other plays - This is our Youth (Blak Yak), Gaslight (Old Mill), Butterflies are Free (Darlington), Amigos (Garrick) and Wuthering Heights (Harbour)...apologies if I've inadvertantly missed any.

Whilst we believe that The Sum of Us was a special production that has deserved the recognition it has received to date, I hope that our theatre is not seen to be grandstanding, or taking away from the achievements of the other productions that have scored equally as well in the nominations. I would be particularly disappointed if anyone involved in one of Old Mill's other nominated plays (in many cases in direct opposition to The Sum of Us) thought that the theatre was favouring the latter - please be assured that this is not the case, and that we will be cheering you all on in equal measure.

I'm really looking forward to Saturday night. I love the Finleys, and wouldn't miss it for the world - having a realistic shot at winning our first ever Best Play award will make it even more exciting. I hope to see you all there Smiling

A media release regarding Sum of Us was distributed by an individual involved in that production. I am aware that the story has been picked up in newspapers well outside the South Perth catchment, and also on general entertainment websites.

I find it disappointing that none of the articles I've read mention any of the other shows that scored equally well on Finley nomination night, including Gaslight, the other Old Mill production that scored 4 nominations. However, I am told that such information was provided with the press release - it just doesn't seem to have been reported.

In any case, please be assured that the articles were in no way sanctioned by the theatre, and do not in any way reflect any preference on our behalf for one production over another. We're very proud of The Sum of Us, but equally as proud of all the shows we ran in 2008.

On a positive note, hopefully the articles have generated a greater awareness of community theatre amongst the general public Smiling

Well I suppose the rule of thumb is any publicity is publicity!

As long as they spell the names right.

Cheers GD, see you on Saturday!

Don't apologise

Dear Garry,

I'm sure I'm not the only one appreciative of your sincere and gracious apology of sorts. My thoughts are that no such apology is required for 'The Sum Of Us' was a superb production in all quatrers, with it's only fault being it sets the bar cloud high for those of us whose bar is the equivalent of a dwarfs midriff! Certainly, all the nominees are worthy, and it's the very nomination that is indeed the true honour. To win is icing on the cake. If you do win however, let that smile swing from ear to ear.

cheers

Johnny Grim
