SYNOPSIS

"A Sound Awake" is a ten minute drama depicting the struggle for survival of two individuals, Oscar and Audrey, as they co-exist within a world befallen by chaos and a cacophony of noise. Individually coping with this daily survival struggle they have their reasons for remaining together; collectively they help fill the void within the other’s life, however apart they cannot continue to exist. Audrey is profoundly affected by the noise of the outside world and plays upon this fragility to influence Oscar in providing for her, whilst remaining cocooned within their soundproofed living quarters. In turn Oscar projects a vision of past, happier times upon Audrey, and uses her need for his caring to ease the loss he has suffered and offer his life some purpose.

The world in which they exist is familiar, however it is a decayed and a fragmented version of the past. The environment is engulfed by an impending soundscape of noise. As this noise becomes louder it pushes Oscar and Audrey to examine the very nature of their relationship and the corresponding extremes they will take in order to survive. A Sound Awake explores their fragile, forced relationship and resultant inner struggle as an aggressive external environment threatens to decide their fate.

After getting a divorce from C.K. Dexter Haven, Tracy Lord prepares to marry again… however, in the days before her wedding, Haven and a reporter, posing as her brother’s friend, show up at her doorstep. From there, Tracy is forced to choose among her past love, her present love and her new love. Amidst the situation comedy, and fast-paced dialogue, Barry explores several contemporary social issues, such as society’s perception of class differences in America and attitudes towards adultery and divorce in the 1930’s.
