William Shakespeare

Joanne Williams

Written in 1598, supposedly at the request of Queen Elizabeth I to see her favourite character, Falstaff, in luurve. MWOW is a delightful, frothy and absurd comic farce.

Aristocratic and rotund lovable Sir John Falstaff arrives in the country town of Windsor. There he is duped into several hilarious and humiliating spectacles when he dares to woo two merry wives of Windsor to get at their husband's vast fortunes. Meanwhile, several plots are hatched by a colourful array of characters to win the hand of the beautiful Anne Page, culminating in a botched fencing duel and a fairy masque at the play's climax which go amusingly awry! If that wasn't enough, Falstaff's companions scheme against him in a confused conny catching of cuckolded and jealous husbands. And the Innkeeper loses his horses to a mad Frenchman, an incompetent Welshman and a host of irate Germans!

Fun, frolics and intrigue abound in The Merry Wives of Windsor!
