Born Nicholas Anthony Iacona Jnr., poor white trash in Chester, Pennsylvania, he was destined for a life of menial labour, petty prostitution and substance abuse. But he had a trump card: one of the most perfect, bubble butts in America. He parlayed his ass from hicksville Pennsylvania to Los Angeles where he became one of the hottest top bottoms in erotic movies. He fell under the influence of the remarkable gay Svengali figure, Chi Chi LaRue, an overweight drag queen and porn director.

LaRue shaped Nick Iacona into the legend that became Joey Stefano and in the process fell in love with his own creation. But, as Joey’s career blossomed, so did his demons, the memory of his father molesting him sexually as a child, his drug dependency, his erratic and outrageous behaviour on set, his desperate search for approval and self-esteem through sex, plus his secret battle with disease. And as Stefano became more and more famous, Nick Iacona began to disappear. The enormous appeal of Joey Stefano reveals a strange dichotomy. Lauded for his stunning looks and his sexual prodigousness, people confused the performer with the person.

Joey Stefano was a fiction that became real. Nick Iacona became the fantasy for a generation of heterosexual women and gay men. Stefano may have lived fast and died young, but he left anything but a beautiful corpse. But like James Dean, he lives on through his films. Today, Joey Stefano is more popular dead than he was alive. He continues to command a huge wide and diverse following. His videos and DVD’s continue to sell and his image is one of the most frequently posted on the internet.
