Weekend of Workshops

Walter Plinge | 07/05/2002 - 16:48

It's been advertised on this page previously, but the ITA's inaugural Interact weekend is almost upon us. We have organised more than 30 theatre-related workshops to run over the long weekend of June 1, 2, 3. During any single session, there will be at least four workshops running at the same time, providing plenty of choice for participants.

There will be eight sessions over the weekend (three on Saturday, three on Sunday, two on the public holiday Monday) allowing each participant to attend eight different workshops. Tickets are $50 for the entire weekend (that's less than $7 per workshop!), or $20 for a single day.

The venue is the luxurious Kalamunda Performing Arts Centre (Canning Rd, Kalamunda, natch) just 20-25 minutes from Perth (straight up Great Eastern Hwy, then Kalamunda Rd). The ITA has put together a guide to accommodation in the area for those who may want to stay for the entire weekend (particularly country visitors). The Performing Arts Centre comprises a 250-seat auditorium and stage, a full-size dance hall, and several smaller rooms, allowing multiple concurrent classes.

This is the first time the ITA (or anyone else, as far as I'm aware) has attempted anything of this magnitude and it's been a long, hard haul. The initial concept was to provide a range of classes in one location in one short space of time, thus providing education and variety without participants having to commit to several weekends and multiple journeys. The format of a single intensive weekend has been particularly attractive to the country clubs, many of whom are arranging group bookings.

I apologise that a full programme has not been made available before now, but there are still some people who we have approached to run workshops who have not yet gotten back to us, and others who initially said they'd be involved but have since seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. As such, there may be slight alterations to the programme below, but any such amendments will be published here as soon as we become aware of them.

It is the ITA's duty to provide a voice and a service for independent theatre in WA. This webpage is one of our great achievements (remembering, of course, that Grant does all the hard work here) and we hope that Interact will grow to become a regular success. However, to do so, we need your support. If you'd like to see more examples of workshop weekends, then please come and support our first attempt. Also remember that some classes are strictly limited, and we have a "first come, first served" policy. Please don't leave your booking to the last minute. Phone George Hackett NOW on 9293-4746. I look forward to meeting you there.
