I voted for sign up only,

I voted for sign up only, but I think there is one big thing missing here:

And that is consideration for Grant.

Anything we think that might need improvement, Grant has to implement. Anything we want to change, Grant has to do it. And most of the issues with running the site, in terms of overall watchdog of censorship/moderation/general site assistance, is all Grant's job.

I think if we want any changes, we should also be respectful of that, and perhaps think of ways that could lessen his burden but still improve this site.

He is, after all, a volunteer site admin.

I guess I should have posted in the first place....

The purpose was to get an idea of general opinions only. Give people a chance to basically vote for the type of security they would prefer. A cross section of the User Population.

It of course gave little consideration to what is feasible or functional.

No worries Grant - I think we all underestimate the amount of time and effort goes in to running this website.

As for the poll, I don't think it will be a cross section of anything- no offense Jeff, it's just you have to have a decent sample to be able to get any sort of idea of the results, and I doubt more than 30 or 40 people (out of hundreds of daily readers and thousands of registered members) will actually take the time to vote.

Which kind of answers your question in a way.

My vote was to leave things the way they are, simply because (as Na pointed out) any changes, modifications censorships etc are all implemented and carried out by one INSANELY dedicated man. Grant Malcolm.
We say "Ooo! Wouldn't this be nice!?" and Grant does his level best to make it so and for the most part, does it without any thanks.
I am like both Na and Jeff in that I am very aware of the workload that Grant places on himself maintaining and running the site, but my question is this. Does it need to be a "one-man" operation? Is there anything that can be done on-line,remotely (as in "from a distance") or even at the "physical" site that others can assist Grant by dealing with? I am not suggesting that Grant throw his house and computing equipment open to all and sundry but I just feel that there must be something we can do to lessen the load.
I am not the most HTML savvy person in the world and I am certainly no longer able to consider myself a Programmer, but surely there must be something (as well as moderating)that I and others like myself are able to A)jump in and help with or B) learn how to do properly and then assist. I know I would be willing to come on board, and I am sure that Na and Jeff would also if "remote" administration were available,I obviously cannot "volunteer" us all, but these two "RU's" I count amongst my personal group of friends and know that if they were able to, they would want to help out because they have both expressed that wish in the past. Why does it have to be a One Man Show? Is the theatre worlds populace devoid of qualified personnel that could give Grant a hand?
Or am I being simplistic as well??
