A WEEK-long exhibition of global indigenous cultures, featuring artworks, artefacts, and live performances from WAs Aboriginal, Mapuche and other indigenous communities will be held at the Fremantle Town Hall atrium from January 9 to 15.
The Indigenous Culture Survival Celebration was initiated by Hamilton Hill grandmother Erica Inostrosa-Lonconao, a member of the Mapuche an indigenous people from the Araucania and Patagonia regions of Chile and Argentina.
We wanted to have an exhibition that showed our culture and history, as well as other indigenous peoples, Erica said.
The free opening ceremony will be held in Fremantles Kings Square from 6.30pm on Sunday, January 9, and will feature traditional indigenous dancing, music and poetry.
The closing ceremony will also be a free concert, held at Fremantle Town Hall, celebrating the survival of indigenous cultures and featuring local Latin-American and Aboriginal bands. Traditional food and drinks will be served at both ceremonies.
The Indigenous Culture Survival Celebration is presented by Healthways to promote Respect Yourself, Respect Your Culture; the Office of Multicultural Interests; City of Fremantle and Association for the Diffusion and Defence of Aboriginal Cultures.
