Can I add some options to the list? Your missing a few styles: circus, puppetry, cabaret (or is that under 'musical comedy'?)...

I'd actually vote for more than one. I like puppetry, but I enjoy a good comedy; not a big fan of musicals, dislike Shakespeare, but enjoy absurdism.

If you think that's all there is to it...

Puppetry isn't just muppets, amazingly enough. Japan has a tradition that is over four hundred years old, and is quite beautiful. Vietnamese farmers turned water puppetry into a thousand year old craft. Marionettes are quite possibly the most difficult puppet you could perform - and if you've ever seen an animatronic, you'd know that Yoda isn't just a green alien.

Secondly, I'm not a performer - so no, I don't like sticking my hand up a puppet's bum. I prefer building to performing.

At any rate, it just proves the point that you can't please everyone, and that not all genres are enjoyed.

I have ticked none of the above probably for the wrong reason.

I would be more likely to go into a production based on whther I like the script and if I respect and trust the director. I have no particular preference for genre's

Like "Logos" I have checked none of the above because I have no strict preference for a genre. To me it also depends on the script and even more so the Director. Perhaps the addition of an "All of the above" button might prove interesting.

Agreeing with the above two comments. I don't have much of a preference of genre. If i like the script or people involved etc I will audition.

But in saying this there are genre's that I don't see out there very much. I like my alternative theatre. That was my vote, but I don't see much out there these days. Universities are the only places I've managed to see what could be considered "alternative" plays but in the Am world, theres little of it. There's little Commedia Del Arte also.

I suppose people have their reasons and tried and tested is less risky. Theatres are taking more chances in recent years then before - or maybe I'm too young to remember. Universities have to run the units which result in alternative shows and thats where I find my ground.

Maybe it's just me and I'm just part of a small population of alternative theatre lovers.

In saying all of this I do enjoy most styles, genres etc of theatre. If the script reads well and the cast and crea are friendly, I'm there.

its just one of those crazy art movements ya know,it ties in with realism and naturalism, its named after an early novelist and naturalist named emile zola. zola was all about breaking the neoclassical restrictions and about the fact that characterisation is the best form of stating truth in writing and in theatre.

to get a good sense of naturalism, read pinter. pinter is really cool Smiling

Pinter is an absurdist and doesn't write naturalistically until his later works. Anton Chekhov as directed by Stanislavkski is Naturalism.
Are you talking about realism? You also need to explore the German theatre movements of the 1930's.
Farce as invented by the French(Feydeau or the guy that wrote Boeing Boeing.)is a very interesting form. It was later massacred by various second rate english writers who introduced childish sexual jokes.

Yes, of course, one of the earliest examples of absurdism. A little naive now but still worth revisiting.
I still think you need to study the German experimenters of the thirties though.

and it would be nice if people in perth actually applied some of these conventions to theatre instead of rerunning the same old musicals over and over, i mean theyre fun but now the times are changing.

it really is time for people to do something a little more daring and be original for a change, we need to start appealing to wider audiences, get young people into theatre and people from all kinds of backgrounds.

im not saying old musicals are bad, im just saying that its time for a little variation. lets make theatre for the people.

Your problem is that people actually want to go to musicals and simply aren't interested in going to intense drama's influenced by Emile Zola. Please do not misunderstand, I would much rather be involved in theatre that really has something to say myself but the audiences simply do not want it. There is a direct correlation between the wealth and comfort of a society and the type of theatre they go to. At the moment as a society we are feeling poor and unhappy so we go to spectacles that entertain without requiring us to think rather than something that forces us to engage the brain.
However, keep the passion, if no-one will do the theatre you want them to do it yourself thats what I do.
