The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of WA (Inc)
is proud to present
"The Mikado"
One of the best loved Gilbert & Sullivan Operettas,
The Mikado is a great show for the whole family.
The Mikado features colourful new settings and over 120 costumes.
The story...
This opera takes place in the town of Titipu, where the townsfolk are waiting the return, from school, of their young ladies; non more-so than the Lord High Executioner, Ko-Ko. He is planning to marry one of the 'three little maids from school', Yum-Yum, but his plans go awry when she falls in love with 'a wandering minstrel'.
Ko-Ko receives a decree from the Mikado, ordering him to perform an execution, so comes to an arrangement with this wandering minstrel that he may marry Yum-Yum, if he agrees to be beheaded at the end of a month, thus allowing Ko-Ko to not only carry out the Mikado's orders but also, then, to marry Yum-Yum himself - all very straight-forward, really!!
But this is Gilbert and Sullivan, so nothing is quite what it seems at first. The plot gets more and more convoluted, complicated by the arrival of the Mikado himself, to see that his orders have been carried out. Everything turns out for the best, in the end, although I'm not so sure Ko-Ko would quite agree.
