Clearing the Confusion

About 55 plays were submitted into the Finleys (from what I have been told and this could be wrong) and only some of the nominations were presented.

As I understand it, the list of plays going for best play are the list of plays submitted for the Finley's period, not those that were short-listed or nominated. The nominated list for best play was not released in order to maintain a certain amount of mystery.

Yes Jeff you are correct. The actual award is "for Best Overall play" and 'Best Overall Musical"

Not every production is entered in any year, it's up to the individual clubs. There are obviously many reasons why some shows are not entered, which is not our province to critisize.

We do try to please everyone - honestly

Actually, every play is 'nominated'. So is everyone who acts, directs, sings, lights, costumes . . . and so on. The adjudicators see every production (54 in 2007) and create shortlists throughout the year.

What the ITA has released is the shortlist for the individual awards (which includes best director). This is the first year the ITA committee has decided to do this (with the full agreement of the Finley Adjudicators) and it has certainly sparked some debate Smiling

We haven't released a shortlist for the plays because, as Jeff said, we need to have some mystery for the night.

Best play covers everything. The adjudicators have a marking key that they use to determine a score for each production. The points given are not for the text itself (that would be a writing award, really, and would be unfair to all those playwrights who are not Mr Shakespeare) but rather for the overall interpretation of the text.

I for one am looking forward to Saturday night. I have no idea who is receiving awards and knowing ahead of time who is on those shortlists has just increased the excitement. I hope to see an auditorium full of people there, having a good time, supporting their club and their friends.
