The plot of the Hot Mikado does not stray far from the Gilbert and Sullivan original. The musical has the same witty tone as the original, with many of the songs bearing the same name and melody. However, it does depart from the traditional Japanese setting and sets the action and the music in the 1940s 'Cotton Club' style setting with the great jazz sounds of the era.
