It's not the ‘C’ word, it’s the ‘V’ word and it's the subject on everyone's lips....

Mandurah Little Theatres controversial and extremely talented director, Karen Francis, is pulling it off once again with her production of The Vagina Monologues. With the gentle hand of Beryl Francis, be guided through the ups and downs of life as a woman (told by Dianne Oliver, Janine Bramall and Sky Ogier).

The Vagina Monologues is Eve Ensler’s hilarious tour into the last frontier, the forbidden zone at the heart of every woman. Based on Ensler's interviews with a diverse group of women, from an antique dealer to a Bosnian refugee, The Vagina Monologues brazenly explores the humour, power, pain, wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement of their most private parts.

Performed with laughter and compassion, The Vagina Monologues gives voice to a chorus of lusty, outrageous, poignant, and thoroughly human stories that will transport you to a world you’ve never dared to know. No one who sees The Vagina Monologues will ever look at a woman's body the same way again!

Vagina Monologues, ages

Hi Dalia,
Although this play is advised 18 years it is not set in stone. It basically means mature audience and when you consider what movies are being shown to 15 plus. Personally I see an imbalance in our society that we can't talk about female issues but we can go to the movies and see someone have their head blown off. Getting back to the play 'Vagina Monologues' It is a fantastic play. It is funny, moving, a bit of an eye opener for some. My daughter who is 17 has been down to rehearsals a few times helping out and although she was a little shocked at first, she absolutely loved the play and the content. For those under 18 it is more to do with allowing parents to make up their own mind of the maturity of their children and how informed they should be. We have a group coming from the local senior school and they have to have parental permission to come along. Personally I think this play is a 'must see' for anyone male or female over the age of 16 but that is just my opinion. The play is contravertial to some but it is not verbally beating up your audience, it is telling the story of these womens lives and experiences which includes their ups and downs, their humor and their hearts.
Regards
Jenny

Hi Dalia,

I first read this series of monologues when I was 15 and performed two of them at age 16 and one more when I was 17. (These were from the V-Day edition btw)

They are a brilliant piece but there are a few sections that could make people quite uncomfortable and I was banned from performing them for my exam last year - cahtolic school etc etc - so yes there is some "mature content" and there is also some pieces that are simple fun. It adresses some serious issues whilst simply acknowledging that there are things women dont talk about and should - hence why a few people get uncomfortable.

All in all. I'd say see it - I'm certainly going to try and get there. It can do wonders for mother/daughter bonding (it did for me. lol)

~ Tari

P.s. that is all personal opinion feel free to ignore it all if you wish

Hi Dalia,
I have just re-read what I posted and I should add that there are parts that are explicit that can make one feel uncomfortable. I don't want to mislead you into thinking the content mild.

Hey Lara,

Ive just finished doing the V Monos with Mandurah Little Theatre. What a fantastic piece to pick for your HSE. A few things you might need to think about
a) do you have any restrictions like with 'offensive' language, topics etc. I believe this has been a problem for some schools in the past.
b) what are your objectives for the piece.

All pieces are fantastic in their own way.

I think 'The Flood' could be a good one to use. It isnt so controversial - but still has depth to it - it has the comedy element but comes straight back down to earth - and you can use different acting styles when expressing the two different ages.

Of course though if you are going for total shock value The Little Coochi Snorcher That Could would be one - however i think its a little too predictable.

Hope this helps a little...

Let me know if how you go!
