Death of a Murderer

Based on the novel by Rupert Thomson and adapted for the stage by Matt Penny

Matt Penny

Britain’s most hated woman is dead, and Constable Billy Tyler has been called
in to guard the notorious child-killer’s body.

During his lonely
“graveyard” shift, in the eerie silence of the hospital morgue, the dead
woman’s presence begins to assert itself, rousing Billy’s own demons.

As the night wears on, Billy’s troubles and anxieties acquire a new unexpected
significance, forcing him to consider whether we are all just one step away
from being monsters.

This is the first stage adaptation of award-winning UK author Rupert Thomson’s work,
based on his novel Death of a Murderer (short-listed, 2007 Whitbread Book of
the Year).

The play takes an intimate look at an extraordinary moment in crime history,
and the inner workings of the human soul.

“If he was really in that house, do you honestly think he would have got out
again?

I'm wondering why the name of the "notorious child killer" is not mentioned in publicity. I would have though that with the subject being very well known, use of her name in publicity material might boost attendace numbers. Is it a requirement of the rights holder that the name not be used?

I'm curious.

In the book "Death of a Murderer" Myra's name is never used. In the first edition of the book Myra's face is used on the cover (much to the chagrin of the author) but the play is really about the police officer (Billy Tyler) guarding the body. I've tried to stick to this convention but did use her name on the back page of the flyer's and she is mentioned on the posters (if you look really carefully).
I also looked into using the image of Myra on the poster's but it was really expensive and involved contacting all her living relatives and asking if it was OK.
The candle image saved me about $2000.
