MAMA SAID
WRITTEN BY Helen Brett
FEATURING ALINTA CARROLL and EDDIE STASZAK
DIRECTED BY Jenny Davis
MUSICAL DIRECTION BY Tim Cunniffe
Sparks fly when a mother and daughter share the stage on the vaudeville circuit in 1950’s Sydney, especially when daughter Anna begins to attract her share of male admiration. Inspired by the life of French chanteuse Edith Piaf, threaded through this drama are classic songs including La Vie en Rose and the famous Marlene Dietrich song, Lili Marlene. Anna’s life transforms when she meets a silent accordionist, Ben a refugee from the displaced persons camps of war torn Europe. Together they build an act and a relationship that is salvation for them both. Mama Said is a romantic and heartwarming story where our songbird heroine meets comedy, danger, sorrow and true love, to the haunting music of the piano accordion.
The play itself is brilliant, the story very moving, yet I was able to laugh out loud at many of the phrases and situations that we, familiar with the post war era, could relate to.

Alinta Carroll is multitalented with a beautiful voice and such vitality, who brings great pathos to her role. She is sensitively accompanied by Eddie Staszak on accordion.
