Mixed Doubles – an entertainment on Marriage.

First presented in February 1969 under the title of We Who Are About To…… written by the cream of British Playwrights including Alan Ayckbourn, Harold Pinter, David Campton and Fay Weldon among others.

The show presents 8 little scenes or vignettes on couples through the various stages of the married state, a sort of fly-on-the-wall or looking through the keyhole experience if you like.

We see the newly-weds on the train to their honeymoon hotel, the bride discovering that her new husband has some annoying habits of which she has until now been totally unaware….the groom nervous about the task ahead!!

Then there is the scene where the adulterous wife who calls off her affair because she realizes that it’s not fun anymore – her husband found out!!

Or the one where it’s not the dialogue between husband and wife that is important - it’s what they are thinking…..and that’s what the audience hears.

Through to the old couple who call into the cemetery on their way home from the shops to look up their friends………..and question why they got married in the first place!!

Some of the scenes are funny, while others are thought provoking or provocative- and may even remind you of someone you know!!  but there is something for everyone.

Linking these scenes are several very brief monologues, all with a reference to relationships….

Director, Clare Fleming chose this production with the aim of giving as many performers as was possible a “starring role” a chance to work on a major piece without the stress of a full length play. "I know it has been a challenge for the novice and experienced actor alike, and all seem to be enjoying the roles."
