In this famous and shocking black comedy, a bitter aging couple, fueled by alcohol, involves a young couple in the destructive, sado-masochistic, and cruel verbal battles that litter their tempestuous, love-hate relationship.
Although the play won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and the Tony Award for Best Play after it opened on 1962, its nomination for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama was rejected by the award's advisory board because of its explicit language, interest in "taboo" subjects, and controversial public reception.
